I really think Pearl Jam's in the bag due to their new album AND the 2013 20th anniversary thing.

I hear a lot of "U2 is too big"...why not "Rolling Stones is too big"? Both are huge bands but to me the Stones just seem MASSIVE, and they haven't toured in a LONG time. U2 just finished the 360 tour. Like someone said about a Zeppelin "reunion" - everyone would be on the fields just for the Stones alone. (To clarify, as long as I can see the Stones elsewhere I would prefer they NOT do Coachella.)

Honestly, if Pearl Jam put out a new album next or this year, they should headline. Yesterday, I heard 5 songs from them over 4 different stations, they could do the 2 weekends and pull two different sets, and they kill live.

Not to mention they have an abundance of material, w/ their last two albums being their most popular among the main stream.

No I really don't think they can headline, I'm merely pointing out that for the past three years there has been one "weak" trendy headliner that defies our logic.

I would love to see tool at coachella, however I don't think it'll ever happen again. GV is taking the fest in a new direction and i don't think tool fits the new coachella brand.

I agree with Elmo, Jack White can't headline, or if he did he'd be a very shitty one. He's the perfect subheadliner though.

I'm quite surprised that nobody's buzzing about Muse. Is it due to Apathy? Too soon to repeat as a headliner? Better choices?

I think they're a lock. Not only is it public knowledge that a new album is to be expected in 2013 (google it, Billboard article), but 2013 will be 20 years since they set a historic precedent by playing a concert at Empire Polo in 1993. I would throw 20 bucks down on this.

as a lot of people have said, it's set up for Pearl Jam to be there next year...new album, 20th etc..NOT TO MENTION, they stopped touring as much due to their families, and go on VERY short tours. 2 weeks of Coachella and shows in between would be PERFECT for them.

Phoenix will be the KROQ Headliner with deadmau5 closing the main, and Outkast or Eminem the hip-hop headliner, Beastie Boys as the wild-card.

I can REALLY see any one of Fugees/Kid CuDi/Wiz Khalifa subheadlining...

Anyone else have a hard time seeing Phoenix headlining? They've only had 2 big radio singles, neither as massive as "Tighten Up" or "Howlin for You". Plus they don't have that all-American blues-rock vibe that makes the Keys so appealing to the masses. Kings of Leon headlined with several albums and years of mainstream media coverage under their belt.

I do believe that Phoenix can headline. They've sold out large venues (although not arenas), and they have 4 sing-along songs. They've killed it at Coachella in the past and draw a diverse crowd that spans the various Coachella groups. They'd be a pretty "weak" headliner in terms of how big a band they are (not an arena or stadium act), but I think they'd deliver a headliner-worthy show. As long as the other two headliners are either huge gets or massive bands, I can see it.

Well, it would would vie w/ Bjork (who had a long history & large critical acclaim despite few "hits") for smallest headliner draw ever, I guess with the exception of Portishead before the Prince add.

I know it will never happen but I would love to see Sting do an Outdoor Theatre set of his good solo stuff (80s & 90s, none of this lute shit) and maybe a couple Police tunes though I could live without those seeing as I already saw the band 4 times on their reunion tour. But I would love to hear some classic Sting ("If I Ever Lose My Faith", etc)

I could absolutely see Jack White touring the new album this year and headlining festivals next year. I don't know why Pearl Jam would settle for headlining festivals with a new album when they could sell just as many tickets on their own, but I would love to see them there. And I could see Beyonce or another woman get the Sunday night spot.

I don't think Jack White will headline until the Stripes reunite, but it's possible. I would like to see him close the Outdoor. I think he's above subbing on the main stage, but I could see him maybe before Pearl Jam (certainly not a lesser act like Phoenix)

Your theory though about "too big for Coachella" would work for bands like U2 and Rolling Stones, bands so massive I don't think they need to play and would be like a giant star throwing the entire rest of the festival out of orbit.

No female pop headliners, please. No Beyonce/Gaga/Adele/etc. Unfortunately a cursory glance through some "Top Women In Music" lists gives me no alternatives for a strong female headliner. There's No Doubt and YYY's, but those are bands not solo artists. The closest thing we have is Florence + the Machine who probably won't be headline-ready until 2014 or 2015. I'm not a huge fan of her music personally.

To me it would really depend on the new album's material and if they can get a few more hits out of it. If they get a few more radio hits on this next album they are probably arena tour worthy anyways, which spells headliner to me. From a (far) distance it seems like 2013 might be weak in terms of headliners unless a couple of the pipe dreams (OutKast, Bowe) or repeated requests (Daft Punk, Pearl Jam, Etc) come to fruition, which means that a commercially viable act like Phoenix would receive all the more consideration for a headliner. It's way early in the process, but right now they are the only ones I can think of that fit in terms of popularity, availability and feasibility.

Correct but that still doesn't mean a headliner might drop out due to a medical condition or some other emergency
