If I remember correctly, he was using the stand for their new songs which they were performing during the first half of their set.

He does not. he's quite nearsighted and apparently doesn't wear contacts. Robert Smith of the Cure is also very near sighted and they have crazy setlists.
I've seen artists under 30 use them. Axl, Alanis, Stipe(lyric sheets)
What's unique about Prince is that the lyrics are in "prince-ebonics"(as his fans call them). For example:
"(eye symbol) would die 4 U"
Bruce Springsteen has been using teleprompters for the past 10 years. But it really came in handy on the past two tours when they were playing at least 5 songs a night from sign requests alone, and bringing out songs they hadn't played in two decades and covers they'd never played live before. So if a teleprompter allows that, I'm all for it!
Coachella 2013:
Blur • YYYs • Modest Mouse • Lou Reed • Jurassic 5 • How to Destroy Angels • Beach House • Metric • Local Natives • Of Monsters & Men • Divine Fits • FOALS • Youth Lagoon
Phoenix • xx • Postal Service • Hot Chip • Grizzly Bear • Franz Ferdinand • Two Door Cinema Club • Yeasayer • Violent Femmes • SMD • Portugal the Man • 2 Bears
Vampire Weekend • Nick Cave • Wu-Tang Clan • Pretty Lights • Eric Prydz • Tame Impala • Lumineers • Tanlines • Thee Oh Sees • Robert DeLong
Depeche Mode definitely uses them.
I used to think it was lame to use teleprompters, but Id much rather see the artist get the song right then fuck up 10x a night.
Upcoming Shows:
Pitchfork Festival: 7/19 @ Union Park
Mountain Oasis Festival: 10/25-27
Those are fun. I can't blame them.
In some cases it's unavoidable. Glen Campbell has to use them due to his current condition, unfortunately he can't remember the lyrics otherwise.
