Thanks C Dub Ya and everyone else for your great tips!
This is my seventh year and I only WISH I knew all of that great info when I went for the first time.
I think the heat is part of what makes Coachella so incredible, but I can't re-iterate enough to protect your body by drinking water, applying liberal sunblock, wearing appropriate clothing and sunglasses, and finding a hat. You will be MISERABLE if you get sunburned on Friday and have to wear anything other than aloe vera gel all day on Saturday and Sunday!
Please, please, please watch your consumption if you aren't used to the heat---that means food, alcohol, drugs, whatever. If you aren't feeling well and start to feel faint, park it outside one of the tents (where there is still shade but you can get some fresh air) and drink some water til you feel better. It's a great idea to take a few breaks throughout the day (and even at night so you don't feel start to feel disoriented leaving one of the tents or getting in line to get to the parking lot).
I forgot who mentioned it here, but it was brilliant: Stop and take in the sunset! Take a few minutes to see one of the most amazing things EVER. It makes everyone look beautiful and will instantly remind you why you saved and bartered to get there! I will never, ever forget the sunset in 2005 when New Order was just beginning their set--it was so unbelievably pretty. People were talking about it and crying!
Oh well, just my two cents. Thanks again all.
Okay I apologize if this has already been answered, but what time would be considered the best time to arrive? And the gates open at 11am correct? Can anyone help me out with this?
Also what's the deal with VIP and will they be selling anything other than beer?
Again sorry if this has already been answered, I didn't see it that's why I'm asking. Thanks.
Everything in this thread seems solid, except the douchebags planning on fighting their way to the front of the crowd. Those guys should be beaten to death.

Courtney said the merch booths take credit, but I'm pretty sure food vendors take cash only.

I think they have female security guards for the girls in line. Sometimes they are thorough, sometimes not. It's the luck of the draw. I've never had security feel me up at Coachella--they didn't make me shake out my bra or anything either.

Last year I definitely purchased a Coachella t-shirt with a credit card. I don't have any insider info as to whether that will be an option again this year -- but my guess is it probably will. That said, cash is quicker and I felt bad making the people behind me in line wait for my credit card transaction to go through.
And yeah, food is cash only.
Danno, yup they are pretty thorough checking the bags. How thorough depends on who checks your bags. Maybe they will unfold and sniff the panties, maybe they wont. Females are usually searched by females, but the bag itself may be another matter. Everyone's experience is a bit different.
Last year I thought I would compartamentalize my goodies in my backpack...they opened all my pouches, and even asked me to take out and unfold my spare change of panties...This year I'm going all clear on the compartment pouches...I would think it eliminates them from unzipping everything...
I guess I've been lucky. They've usually just taken a peek inside my backpack and squooshed the backpack with their hands to feel if it had any contraband.

last year, i was there pretty early, prolly got thru the gates at 12:30,
i unzipped my backpack, security looks in and says, "no guns"? and i said no, and he waved me by. then in pat down area, i looked around...all the security gaurds were busy, so i just walked past. easiest concert entry ever.
but its all luck of the draw.
this seems like the best thread to ask: any tips on meeting your clan? Every year it's the biggest hassle of the weekend (outside of losing the car keys at the pool and missing M.I.A. while sorting through dirty towels). We pretty much set a rule of knowing a couple must see sets for everyone and trying to be as close as possible to the left of the sound stage wherever we are. Combined with mass text messaging it works well enough that no one's been lost, but I'm sick of spending half the day solo... though i accept it.
I'm definately bringing walkie-talkies. It's just going to be me and my fiance and she's little... don't want to lose her in the massive crowd in another state (we live in San Antonio, TX). That would be shitty.![]()
