Exclamation iPhone users, enable the Find My iPhone app! It helped get my phone back!

*Sorry if you saw me post this in another thread earlier, I'm making this one because I can't edit the title on the other post, rendering it useless :/

Weekend 2 peeps with iPhones, have an awesome time, and please take a few minutes to get that app set up if you haven't already (a back-up wouldn't hurt, either.) It may be what saves you!

I lost my iPhone Sunday night (I had a screenshot of a friend's contact info as the phone's wallpaper) and when I got to the hotel I tracked it -- as of Monday morning it was still laying on the ground at Coachella, but I couldn't get back there to try and recover it myself before my ride left. I sent a message to Coachella's Lost & Found team and continued to track it. I filed a police report, and with their help plus the app's tracking beacon and remote alarm, I was able to get it back!

(By the way, Coachella Lost & Found contacted me a little while ago to say they didn't find my phone -- if you lost something last weekend and have yet to hear back, good luck and be patient, I'm sure they'll get to you soon!)

This sounds like a great success story so congrats on getting your phone back. Just so I'm clear, the police tracked down the person with your phone and busted them or what?

Thanks, I definitely feel fortunate to have a story with a happy ending!

When I turned the app on, I set a passcode lock remotely, and once the location loaded, I was able to contact police and stay on the line with the deputy who went out to investigate its whereabouts. I was able to see my phone on the Google map traveling through a neighborhood and stop in someone's backyard, and when he went up to speak to the people inside, I used the app to make the phone continually sound an alert (it plays loud, overriding any other volume setting you may have), and he was able to follow the sound and locate the phone!

That's pretty amazing! Glad it worked out for you. I'm impressed that the police got involved so quickly (i guess they didn't have much going on once everyone left?)

So let me get this straight, you lost your phone because you were either to intoxicated or just plain dumb so you went and filed a police report? Even if the police had nothing better to do you sound like a fool.

    FAIL

I lost it because it fell out of my pocket like zillions of others (witnessed while standing in line at lost and found), and I filed a report because when I saw the phone move 2 hours away, I asked the police what my options were getting help recovering it. They told me they couldn't help me unless I did that first.

I'm telling the story because it could happen to anyone, and if you lose it during the festival, you can use another friend's iPhone to track it and see if it's still on the grounds.

    You need a hug.

You saw the phone move? weird.

But yeah this is useful information. Shit happens, here's one shit that probably happens a lot, and a strategy for dealing with it. Thanks.
