I emailed Coachella yesterday and they just got back to me. Since they said no metal poles i'm also going to bring plastic instead of metal stakes.

I'm very fair and sensitive to sun, and in the past have always brought a home-made shade structure with wood poles, a reflective tarp and zip ties. This, in addition to tent stakes, are being confiscated as we speak according to the message boards. If I had been notified ahead of time, this may have not been an issue, because we could have planned an alternative, but to be the first day of camping AND JUST FINDING OUT NOW?!

This is ridiculous! It is a safety hazard in a greater way than someone poking someone with a pole or plastic stake to not have a source of shade, as well as to have tents flying everywhere with the extreme winds!

The guys confiscating the stakes are in cahoots with the General Store staff that are re-selling stakes....wtf are they thinking of doing with 50,000+ confiscated tent/canopy stakes?

And the stakes they are selling inside are "used"... hrmmmmm.

My canopy poles are metal as well! If we happen to make it through with them will security confiscate once it's set up?! I don't want them to come take our shelter away, as my friends and I are all sleeping under a canopy with sheets tied around as walls.

ok they keep switching up their terms (metal poles/stakes). I can only hope they keep referring to metal stakes because how can they even suggest you can't have metal poles. Tents come with metal poles. I can't imagine they'd be that stupid, but they're proving otherwise so far.

This is so annoying. My canopy and tent comes with metal stakes. My canopy also has TINY little holes for the stakes and plastic ones are bulky and will not fit. LE BOO! I emailed coachella and this is what I got :

I will be attending weekend 2 and I am very concerned about the “metal pole” situation. The poles on my canopy are like a hollow metal/aluminum type. Will those be allowed? If not, how am I suppose have shade for the weekend? I do understand that I need to bring plastic stakes.

Came in yesterday afternoon. Tent with metal poles, metal stakes and a regular hammer and had no problem. Brand new EZ up with metal stakes as well and they didnt say a word... I don't what the deal is.. Someone is making there own rules???

Seems like if your mallet and stakes are separate from your canopy/tent they will confiscate.
Anyone with the stakes inside your tent/canopy bag get them confiscated? Seems like they were not regularly checking inside tent/canopy bags...can someone verify that they went inside your tent bag to take stakes?

I followed thisthread since yesterday. It is incredibly helpful. I rolled in by myself around 3pm. I was surrounded by three cars getting busted on all four sides of me. One car had meth with intent to distribute. I was so lucky i got a guy who just peeked in my cooler and let me go. I hid my stakes and my pot. I dont think i was the people they were profiling. Def targeting younger people in large groups in one car.

...I would assume that any "iffyness" regarding the metal-stake policy might stem from the fact that some idiot might be able to nail the latter through his/her foot by mistake or use it as a possible weapon against the demons chasing after them on a bad trip or whatever...

But if they have an actual rule about it, then it SHOULD be in the camping FAQ.
