Thread: Dire Straits

    Default Dire Straits

The last great reunion that can possibly happen.

Would be great if they headlined Coachella 2013.

I'd be so into it. More so if they played Tunnel of Love, but Mark hasn't since his dad died because it was his favourite song. Very sad

XTC, CCR, Genesis with Peter, ABBA...

I was going to write Stone Roses and all 4 Monkees out of habit.....

I absolutely love Dire Straits, they've been one of my favorite bands for years, but they are right there with Clapton and Fleetwood for me in terms of "Awesome, but wouldn't work at Coachella", unless there is a chance that they could be billed low enough to get off main (not remotely likely). A Mark Knopfler solo set on the Outdoor might work, but even then there are better festivals for that (I hate to say it, but Bonnarroo, also Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Sasquatch, etc).

jeez, MTV really fueled that band's record sales. Most likely more than any one else. I did like "Action Motion" sports blooper one, but wouldn't really care to hear it live.

Ironically, Brothers in Arms is probably the second-to-last album I would reach for (or click on in iTunes as the case may be) if I were in the mood for Dire Straits.

The fact that they sold 32 million albums doesn't mean they could headline.

Alanis Morrisette is the next on that list at 32 million and no way she could ever headline.

Eagles headlined ACL and have done crazy business in socal venues.

Throw in some of the 70's peers and you could have them headline their own festival(1 day like Metallica) on the Polo grounds.

I always thought Fleetwood Mac would be good if they had Christine McVie back.

Hey at your festival AND mine they are headliners. I'm 27 and friends of mine just a few years younger didn't grow up listening to them. I don't see them being a headliner at Coachella. They are not quite on the level of "living legend" as Paul McCartney or Roger Waters or Prince as far as the Coachella demographic is concerned.

All true, and all irrelevant. These things are driven by business, not taste.

I understand the hypotheticals make this all a bit absurd, but consider this thought experiment: IF Dire Straits were to reunite and play Coachella, THEN please explain to me how Mark Knopfler would sign a contract for anything below headline status. 32 million records sold, you think he'll play for 10 grand in an afternoon slot in the Gobi?
