There's a front part with a different name and a back part that has a patio and various shitty bar bands or DJs (I've played there a couple times)

I saw Fuck Buttons at Detroit Bar a few weeks ago and it was the one of the most depressing things I've attended. There were, maybe, 14 people there total? 20 max. At one point it smelled weird - then I found out the girl working the bar singed her hair from one of the candles on the bar. The whole thing was especially sad when remembering how cool Detroit Bar used to be. I remember seeing Girls there right after Album was released w/ Hunx & His Punx opening and it was such a party... packed out the door. Good Times.

Someone associated with it (booker?) moved to the Observatory.

I have never been to The Observatory but have seen plenty of shows in the Constellation room at The Observatory. Ironically every show I've wanted to see has been in The Constellation room. It's a much superior place then Detroit Bar for local bands/Smaller bigger acts.
For me the only major thing that blows about the Observatory is that it's all ages so you get some highschoolers running around making me feel old. Gives it a sort of a roller rink feel at times. Although it's funny when the act playing the main stage is totally at odds, musically, with the act in the Constellation Room. I remember a Neon Indian gig there once and the band on the other stage was something that attracted juggalo-type people. The contrast of different audiences members mixing in the common areas was pretty funny.

I remember hearing that someone from Detroit Bar (maybe there person you're referring to) was trying to start another venue in Huntington Beach on Main St. They were going to renovate the old movie theater next to Fred's on the second floor across from the parking structure and turn it into a second incarnation of "The Golden Bear". But the HB city counsel denied the entertainment license so those involved took their business to what is now The Observatory. I think I read about this in an OC Weekly. Can't recall.

Too bad they couldn't get Golden Bear going. I guess it was like a landmark of HB from the 60's and 70's that booked all kinds of classic shit. Would've been cool to get some respectable acts there to thin out the douchiness on Main Street. Maybe it's for the better.

Capital Cities on NYE @ Observatory.
On the fence.... I HATE "Safe and Sound". I'm listening to the rest of the album and it's tolerable so far.
    $50

I'm thinking that if I drank enough the band or price shouldn't dampen the night.

You've got to have a better alternative than that.

There's a handful of nightclub that would be cheaper, but my friends aren't into that scene.

Unless I find something through Couchsurfing, I'm afraid I don't have alternatives.

So, my buddy who owns The Alley bought this place, remodeled it and renamed it the Wayfarer. I went Saturday night to watch Froth and had a blast. The bar is whiskey centric. The crowed was pleasant and there were many beautiful women. Monday night was very hipstered out but it was fun to see. Good times.

I don't know. I think Bird might have blown her chance.
