There will be less pressure on him than there is in Boston. I could see him doing well too. But I don't think he'll live up to that contract.

It's too bad they couldn't interest them in Lackey, as well.

Well done boston? Really? What do they have to look forward to? Seems to me the whole organization is in freefall since last year. I guess they can only go up from here but right now they are a long.... long way from anything

They have a chance to rebuild now without all these huge contracts to work around.

I really hope James Loney produces for them. I love that guy and he's just struggled so much. I want him to be an all star, even if he's not a Dodger anymore.

Even though Manny got suspended in 2009 for doping, I wouldnt say his time in LA was a complete bust. He got them to the NLCS in 2008 and had one the best 2nd halves of a season ever by batting .396 with 17 HRs and 53 rbis in 2 months. In the playoffs that year he batted over .500!

Uh, they successfully dumped 250 million dollars worth of bad contracts on the Dodgers. They have quite a bit of flexibility now.

EDIT* Also, aren't the Dodgers giving up their best pitching prospect as well?

They can look forward to not having $250 million or so in contracts. They actually have some good prospects coming up not coming from the dodgers. They might not be competing with the Yankees anytime soon, but they now have money to sign some pitchers or whatever else they want to do, which they didn't have before.

    edit: what gribbz said

No, Zach Lee is their top prospect and top pitching prospect. Webster is the second. It's a very interesting trade and I think it's contingent on Crawford bouncing back, they kind of handcuff themselves for the next couple of years. I have to say though I hate the idea of Adrian in dodger blue and him playing in the division.

I know, he had a great year that year. But look at what he did after that. Once he stopped juicing he couldn't hit.

Just bought two upper deck tickets on Stubhub for tonight's Dodgers game for a whopping $11.41 after fees. Adrian is scheduled to be in the lineup tonight. Should be fun.

Thank you, Magic Johnson. You just passed Kevin McHale on the Boston Sports Hero's list.

Dumping these stiffs and their obscene contracts was the only way the Sox could have hoped to reverse the present state of affairs and the course of our beloved franchise.

There is so much happiness and hope today: De La Rosa and Webster are stud prospects. DeJesus looks like fair swap for Punto with more promise. If either Loney or Sands pans out, it will be gravy.

Beckett is a gopher ball specialist these days who can't get out of the first inning. Crawford has been an unequivocal 20 million dollar/year BUST. Gonzalez was unhappy and not earning his 18 mil.

I wish them well in Dodgertown.

The one thing I am positive that the red sux will do with all this free space now, give out more contracts that overpays the players in order to keep them from going to the Yankees.

Got a reserve (face=16 bucks) for ten bucks Weds night in the parking lot to watch the Giants complete the sweep. Snuck down to club level in the sixth. Laughed at the huge lines for the $12.50 beers. Good times.

Adrian Gonzalez hit a 3-run homer in his first at bat with the Dodgers. Not a bad start, I must say.

Now that Gonzalez has homered in his first Dodgers AB, I'll weigh in on the deal. As a Dodgers fan, what thrills me most about this trade is the clear message the new owners are sending that they're not fucking around... they'll spare no expense to make sure the Dodgers become major players again in the baseball world. Now this deal is undoubtedly risky and financially burdensome, but I love how bold it is. They've completely revamped the roster in less than a season and have set themselves up to be serious contenders for the next several years. Gonzalez is the real get and a perfect fit for this lineup; Beckett worries me a bit but could easily regain his form in a pitcher's park; who knows about Crawford and Punto was just thrown in for the hell of it.

I'm also sad to see Loney go because I hoped for many years that he'd finally realize his potential, but it's really not a big loss. Ivan DeJesus hasn't shown anything special so far, and while Sands has some power, he's underwhelmed in his limited major league experience too. I'm most sad to see De La Rosa go because he showed some serious talent last season (the guy flirts with 100 mph too), but it remains to be seen how he'll be coming off of Tommy John surgery. I haven't seen Allen Webster pitch, so I have no idea how strong a prospect he is, but I'll take the scouts' word for it. That's tough to give up, but there's still Zach Lee who should be better than both these pitchers eventually. And.... the Dodgers have Yasiel Puig coming in from Cuba too. If he pans out, there's serious power and speed all over this lineup.

I was thinking of Puig. What are they gonna do with him? They have Kemp-Ethier-Crawford-Puig, who are all signed long term. Unless they trade someone, someone's gonna have to change positions.

Can someone who thinks that The Sox got the better side of this deal please explain to me how this makes the Dodgers less likely to win? And I don't think money is that big an issue for the Dodgers anymore.

It's not that, it's more the fact that Boston gets some good pitching prospects that are cheap, James Loney (who at least has always shown potential, and maybe the change will encourage him) and they free up a ton of money for them to rebuild a new team. Getting rid of the contracts is huge for them, and the Dodgers get some talent that will hopefully help.
