We only share the dog we got together. He had a Golden Retreiver before, and the other dog Maggie, that died. We didn't get the shared dog until later.

My gf of 3 years and I just broke up. I'm not sure what to do about the dogs. They are more hers than mine, but she has no means to take care of them now. At least the one is well trained

... did nobody else find that hilarious? I mean, I'm sorry for your break up and all, but you gotta love that the point of consternation in the breakup being "where does the dog go?" And the answer turned out to be, "the dog left him too."

If she can't look after them, take those dogs and fucking run. Trust me, you don't want to be dealing with the shit I'm putting up with now from my ex. I'd rather deal with a dog I have to train up a bit than be talking to his dumb ass every week.

To those who can't figure out how to cook: do they know how to read? How hard is cooking if you can?

I don't know a lot of cooking terminology and I don't have all the special cooking utensils. At least that is what I tell myself. Also sometimes I don't know what ingredients ARE or where to find them. Maybe I'm making excuses, but cooking seems so daunting to me. I just never felt comfortable or enjoyed doing it.

If you don't know the terminology it's hard to follow a lot of recipes. Although, I find they are making them easier to follow for people who don't have basic knowledge.

My sister and I grew up in the same house but she hated helping mom in the kitchen, and until 15 years ago she couldn't boil water without burning it. She is a pretty good cook now but can only cook from recipe books. I was a nerdy kid and had no friends, so I spent a ton of time in the kitchen with my mom and learned a lot, I don't own a recipe book. I just throw shit in a pan and it usually turns out pretty good.

I get that it's difficult to follow complicated recipes if you don't know terminology (I can see words like julienne, braise, chiffonade, deglaze, parboil, pare, truss and mince tripping people up). But that's really no excuse for not knowing how to do something as basic as pasta as referenced above with the frying pan or alfredo anecdotes. I mean, the directions are ON THE BOX.

Chiffonade even throws me off. Google is awesome for cooking help though.

    - the internet will tell you what things are
    - the internet has videos of people doing the terminology you don't understand
    - you don't HAVE to have all of the cooking utensils. I keep forgetting to buy a whisk, but a fork works fine in its place.
    - you don't have to follow the instructions to an exact T and it's ok if you don't have every single food or spice. There's leeway in cooking.

I don't consider myself a good cook, just adequate, and I'd like to learn more.

I hate to admit it, but I actually learned a lot of more complicated techniques by watching cooking shows on television. I think it's much more difficult to learn via printed word. Somehow seeing someone do it is much easier because you can get a real sense of coloring, size, timing, frequency, etc. I'd imagine tutorial internet videos would serve the same purpose.

food.com or foodnetwork.com give small tutorial popups on my facebook feed all the time. This is how I learned not to put tomatoes or onions in the fridge. I also perfected my steak this way. I make a damn good steak.

ChefSteps.com might be another source to check out. It's not really entry-level videos; it's probably more appropriate for an intermediate to advanced-level cook with an interest in modernist cuisine or molecular gastronomy. But it's a pretty cool resource and has some cool content to teach you how to do things in new ways.

Amy, how do you feel about a services trade? I will come over and cook for you, and in exchange you can iron my shirts because I hate doing that.

You should have just said that in the first place instead of making excuses as to why you can't cook.

yeah if i don't understand something when i am cooking i look it up or ask someone. some cookbooks like the joy of cooking are really helpful for me because it's more than just a recipe. for example, the pie dough section has a few pages about how to prepare the dough that you wouldn't gather from a list of ingredients.

and last night i met up with this guy i used to date a few years ago so that he could give me back this book i'd lent him. we planned to just have happy hour, but it was like 8:30 when i realized i absolutely had to get home. i had a really good time and we will probably go out again soon. he kissed me on the cheek when we left.

I have seen your plates, I would do your laundry, fold and iron if you were cooked for me.

I did make myself spaghetti last night, and that is the first time I cooked anything in weeks. And it's SPAGHETTI. I've been eating out a lot or preparing raw meals.
