Thread: Help an electronic music newb out.

Default Help an electronic music newb out.

I am just getting into electronic music. I love Infected Mushroom, they were my gateway band after I saw them live (I love their really old stuff as well as newer), and from what random things I've heard on Pandora seeded with them. So I'm guessing I like genres like trance, psychedelic or goa trance, etc... and seem to like it when i youtube such things (psytrance, dark psy trance, psychedelic trance, etc..). I also really like earlier works by The Prodigy (esp Music For the Jilted Generation).

On the other hand, I know I do NOT like house, and dubstep (or at least the mainstream version of it, which is all I've really heard...). Bands like Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, David Guetta, Kaskade, deadmau5, Skrillex, or Daft Punk.

I'm just not into simple, poppy, dancy beats, catchy choruses, and 808 bombs. I prefer music that's a bit faster, aggressive, or has lots of complex instrumentation and melodies (I come from listening to a lot of death metal, post metal, psychedelic rock, prog rock, jam bands).

Please help out an electronic music newb here. What DJs at coachella might I enjoy?

Here are some other DJ's I've heard bits of on Rdio, youtube, and Pandora, that seem to be what I like: X-Dream, Astrix, Hallucinogen.

If you group Daft PUnk with those assholes again I will slice your throat.
10/8 - Little Dragon @ Marquee (Tempe, AZ)
10/11 - Carolina Chocolate Drops @ Rialto Theater (Tucson, AZ)
11/10 - The Black Keys @ US Airways Center (Phoenix, AZ)
    4/10/15 - 4/12/15 - Coachella

Definitely not what I was originally looking for/expecting, but I like what I hear so far! Listening to his lastest album ISAM on Rdio.

I apologize. I don't mean to say Daft Punk is the same genre as Skrillex, for example. Just not a fan of them, sorry. As stated, I'm very new to electronic music. I couldn't even really quanitfy/describe the difference between techno and trance right now. I randomly stumbled upon Infected Mushroom in late 2010, and ended up really liking it, and found out there was a lot more variety of electronic than i thought.

Uhh... as far as the Coachella line up goes, maybe flying lotus?

Fuck listening to this track just got me so psyched to see him again.

Maybe check out the dome (if there is one this year) for some good dubstep/house that isn't fucking awful. Dubstep and house can actually be very fantastic genres. Don't let the cheese dick DJ's ruin your image of them.

    For example:
    (House)

    (Dubstep)

(hope you're listening on a system with good bass)

    Does this help?

Thanks, I will check those out once I'm done listening to Amon Tobin and Atari Teenage Riot.

I realize they might be good genres, and that's why i want to explore more electronic music, since I feel i'm pretty ignorant on it. It would be like someone thinking Slipknot is representative of all metal, Green Day of punk music, Souljah Boy for hip-hop, etc...

Unfortunately what seems to be blowing up nowadays is not what I like, and what is going to pop up in search results for electronic music.

Newb is correct since you don't like Swedish House Mafia, at least you realize it, that makes you less of a newb.

based on your background, i say check out:

    Flying Lotus
    Atari Teenage Riot
    Modeselektor
    Zedd

do not check out Amon Tobin. They are just playing ISAM and it is unlistenable garbage. anyone that says otherwise is pretentious as hell. also, i will get massive amounts of hate for this, but everyone is wrong but me.

Apparently he's been playing a lot of his older tunes too. Like this one:

See this is great. There were only three tracks on ISAM I could handle (Wooden Toy, Kitty Cat, and Dropped From The Sky). What do you think the odds are that there will be a significant amount of actual music and not the noises that are the rest of ISAM?

I think the odds are pretty high. I would definitely recommend seeing his set if you like any of his music.

Not precisely EDM, but I'd recommend:
    M83
    Neon Indian
    The Rapture
    Miike Snow
    SBTRK
    Flying Lotus
    Amon Tobin
    Beats Antique

(actually just read your post more closely... you won't like Miike Snow, Rapture, probably Neon Indian, altho the others might prove interesting)

Search splash by Subfocus. I would say thats his most "innovative" track, yet still stays true to his sound. If u can dig that u can dig him. If not FlyLo will do u right.

As far as psy-trance goes, good luck finding more of that. That scene is dead in America for the most part. The only people keeping that going is IM, and they havent released anything memorable in quite some time
    G-funk acquired, thank you Coachella

As everyone has said. Flylo, Amon Tobin, SBTRKT, Modeselektor. There may be more once/if the do-lab/dome lineup is announced. There are so many things happening in the EDM scene at any given time that it's hard for anyone to keep up. Your best bet is to just keep searching for shit, and you'll find what you like.

You'd probably like Paranormal Attack, also, based on your liking of IM. But they aren't on the Coach lineup. Cheesy banging type shit, just like IM. (I say cheesy, but I do enjoy it all when I'm in the right mood)

Also, don't skip out on Amon Tobin's ISAM performance based on what you thought of the record. He plays a good mixture of all his music, and the visuals are pretty fucking amazing. I wouldn't miss it if I hadn't seen it before, and it will be hard for me to skip a second time around unless there is a major conflict for me.
