Yep! And I'm sure I'm not the only one interested. And, yes, I know about Glassdoor.

Word of advice. If at all possible, always have someone proof your cover letter(s) and resume. It can be so easy for your brain to trick you in to seeing the correct version of a misspelled word, because by the time you've created your tenth version of a letter, you've practically got whole passages memorized. I tend to have a friend who is a professional writer/proof-reader take a look at each new version I create. I have about 10 different versions of my resume - tailored to specific industries I apply to ex: financial industry version, broadcast media version. But, this is where it gets tricky. For every one of those 10 versions, I have literally dozens of different variations, each further tailored to that specific employer. This is great because it shows that I both know my trade, I know their industry and I know their brand. But it also means I'm making updates to these letters every single day. And I can't possibly expect a friend to proof every single variation. But, now I wish I had. Because I sent a letter to one of my dream employers with a stupid typo. This particular brand has done an amazing job of speaking to and supporting communities which have been ignored by their competitors - underserved audiences - in this case Asian Americans. And I referenced my admiration for this tactic in my cover letter, but what I had actually written was undeserved. In the five or six times I'd proofed the damn letter before sending it, I'd never seen this stupid mistake, because spell-check obviously wouldn't cover it and when my eyes saw those letters in "undeserved" and sent that message to my brain, my brain tricked me into seeing the correct word, underserved. And, worse, made me sound like a casual racist. Ugh.

(And, yes, I realize that if I was actually dropping some casual racism in there, the word would be undeserving, but still...)

eek! yeah that sounds like a big typo! you're so right, when you look at something too much, you need outside help. did this company ever call you?

also, maybe i missed it, but what happened to the person with the fake pee who thought they were getting "fast tracked" and offered a job and then never heard anything?

Ouch. Yes -proof-reading, not just spell checking, is definitely a benefit.

I start training on Monday but this company seems extremely disorganized. The hiring manager finally did respond to my email letting me know that my background check had still not been completed. Then a couple days before I got the email confirming my new start date I started getting benefits information in the mail. Orientation is tomorrow but they had me go into the office today to complete some paperwork that could have easily been done tomorrow at orientation.

I have already received a different job offer for a position with more pay and a shorter commute from a local marketing agency but that doesn't start until May. So I'm going to give this company a couple weeks and if they don't get their act together I will probably put my two weeks in the day before Coachella!

No. I just submitted my application on Monday and the job was only listed this past Friday, so I wouldn't be expecting to hear anything for at least a week. Who knows, perhaps they'll ignore (or even miss) the typo and focus more on the content of my letter. Onward.

Hey folks, just a handy tip. Today I got a resume from a guy that classified his employment from 2010 to 2012 as an "Indepedent Online Poker Specialist". DON'T DO THIS.

You'd be surprised how many Texans I know that have similar resumes.

He attempted to describe that he used his understanding of statistics and applied it to online gaming so he could make a living off of it. To me it just screamed "unemployed".

There are plenty of people who legitimately left the workforce to pursue professional poker.

    Senior Director/EVP of:
    - Strategy and Development
    - Strategic Initiatives

I think if someone is an "executive" they are not a manager, coordinator, consultant, etc. Needs to be either an EVP or C-level. Unless the "executive" title is a red herring, in which case you could call them SVP or something silly.

I had no idea it was so common, but based on the nature of the roles we are hiring for, that wouldn't be considered acceptable recent work experience.

I hate the word "initiatives" and in this case, the implementation of (which is usually the most important part of an initiative), is handled elsewhere. This particular role is around strategic research and product development and less around initiative management.

What's more important? Gaps in work experience or honesty with work experience?

Sadly, this is true. I've had to turn down a handful of candidates not necessarily because they weren't qualified, or that their work/personal history included something illegal, but rather because they were involved with activities that my firm didn't want to associate itself with.

With that being said, my firm had no problems associating itself with clients that had dealings in those same activities/industries.

    Everything counts in large amounts.

Spending all your time gambling, no matter how profitable, could be construed as a pretty risky decision. It calls the individuals' judgment into question. Waiting for Archie Bunker to come after me here in three .. Two..
