I think the thing that you're missing is that I'm fully aware and admitting that they are "catering to the masses." They are making lineups that they think will sell tickets, and based on the fact that it sold out in 3 hours, I'd say they're doing a great job of that.

But to suggest that this year's lineup is somehow more mainstream or pop friendly than lineups of the past is just wrong and misinformed. You could even call it ignorant of the facts.

Let's take a look at the historical evidence:

1999 - Beck, Tool, Rage against The Machine... you're right. None of those are Mainstream names at all.
2001 - Weezer, Paul Oakenfold, Jane's Addiction, Fatboy Slim. Wow. Shocking none of these are acts I've heard on the radio... oh wait, yes, ALL OF THEM ARE.
2002 - Oasis, Prodigy, The Strokes, Paul Oakenfold... fucking CAKE.
2003 - The Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The White Stripes, Jack Johnson.
2004 - Radiohead, The Cure, the Pixies
2005 - Coldplay, Bright Eyes, Weezer, Wilco, Snow Patrol - Yeah. You're right though. Weezer isn't a mainstream band at all.
2006 - FUCKING MADONNA PLAYED. It is literally not possible to get more mainstream than that.
2007 - Red Hot Chili Peppers again. Oh, and Interpol, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, and the Decemberists. Those are all mainstream pop bands, bro.
2008 - Jack Johnson. Roger Waters. Death Cab for Cutie. Prince. All very mainstream fucking music, dude.
2009 - Some guy that was in THE FUCKING BEATLES. How underground is that? Wow, you fucking toolbag.
2010 - Jay-Z and Muse. Those are super subversive acts. I wonder how anyone ever heard of those crazy bands.
2011 - Kanye West sure isn't mainstream at all. And neither are Kings of Leon. That shit is deep underground.

Do you see my point here? There are literally huge mainstream pop names every year of Coachella ever. To suggest that:

That's a lot of editing. And you named only a few big acts from each year... There are a lot more this year, unless you just neglected to put more thought into those edits. There are also a lot less up an comers/ underground/ lesser known overseas acts on the bill that GV prides itself on billing.

You're missing the point entirely. First you said that big mainstream names aren't what has made Coachella as popular as it is today... then when I pointed out that there have been big mainstream names every year, you... what? point out that I edited my post several times? Ok. So?

You're just wrong, so please just STFU and move on.

I'm an abrasive, drunken asshole right now who reads the boards too much to the point that my negativity had reached a boiling point. I understand your points, but I'm still a skeptic on how this years festival is going to play out. Okay.

My point is that "big picture" wise, GV would take in more money at the current ticket face value that asking $500.

Some of the Virgin Festivals in North America tried agressively pricing 2-day events with some so-so lineups. They didn't stick around very long.

They tried charging $80-90 per day for shows with single headliners like Roots, Killers, My Chem and Ben Harper.

Ok. My point is that you don't have any fucking idea what you're talking about. Goldenvoice and AEG has a pretty good resume as far as putting on music festivals. I would bet that they make every effort to maximize their profits and likely don't need your input on that topic.

This lineup seems less commercioal to me than the past several years. No classic rock. No Coldplay or Madonna. Dre is certainly less mainstream than Jay-Z or Kanye (and was a legit innovator with NWA and in his production of others). I was sooo relieved the Black Sabbath and The Who rumours didn;t come true.

GV only sell around 8-9,000 VIP tickets at $699 per year. If your theory was correct, they would sell more as that is a value added product.

Are you retarded? My "theory," as you put it, is that Goldenvoice has more experience running musical festivals than you, and as such, is in a more informed position to make business decisions such as these.

If my "theory" is incorrect, that means you must have some experience in this vein?

So, how many 3-day musical festivals have you run? Really? More than 10? That is pretty impressive. I guess you're right about every....ohhhh wait. It's actually zero and you're a douchebag. Please STFU and die of cocks.

Looks like a simple typo by Bumblebee misconstrued his/her point. I assume you meant "than" as opposed to "that."

Changing "that" to "than" makes the statement:

My point is that "big picture" wise, GV would take in more money at the current ticket face value than asking $500.

Bumblebee, you have now hit on why Goldenvoice would (according to Stubhub there is a huge chance they do) sell on Stubhub. This brings us to how Stubhub and some other secondary markets allow Goldenvoice to charge at various price points on the demand curve.

Goldenvoice would not sell out if they sold all tickets at $500, so instead they sell a large percentage at roughly $300. The rest of the tickets they sell on the secondary market. Currently, the average pass sold on Stubhub for weekend 1 is $596. They can raise this price or lower it depending on the market reaction.

This allows Goldenvoice to make a "shit-ton" more revenue than if they sold all their tickets at $285.

VIP tickets are a superior good because they are limited. If the VIP sections were packed, then the VIP passes would lose their value.

I would like to point out that the VIP section really isn't that cool...except for the bathrooms.

Yeah, I'm still not clear on this part:

Who gives a fuck? Even if Goldenvoice is doing this (and no one can say whether they actually are or not) what fucking difference does it make? Goldenvoice is allowed to sell tickets to their shows in whatever fashion they fucking choose. If they make more money off the tickets that way... good for them. Congratulations.

What the fuck is your point?

OP remains a moron. So far 1,314 tix have sold on Stubhub for $540 on average for a gross of $710K. After 15% commission to Stubhub, net revenue is $600K to Sellers. Since GV proved they could sell out Shuutle / Pass combos, let's call the true cost of the Stubhub inventory to be $350 per pass (or $460K). $600K - $460K nets a profit of $140K to ALL sellers. Even if GV conspired to be half the sellers on Stubhub, the total opportunity is pocket change to them in exchange for a whole lot of effort plus reputational risk.

I never once have complained about capitalism and "free market economics." Stubhub is actually very close to a free market, and I think its awesome.

As for Coachella using Stubhub, I also think its great and innovative. It is a way that they can maximize their profits by selling at different price points on the demand curve.
