Thread: Set Time Predictions - coming soon

I was thinking about the sound bleed issues on Saturday, and I'm wondering if they might put Jeff Mangum on the Main and GY!BE in the Gobi simultaneously, with a silent Outdoor and Mojave

I also don't want the conflict, but with the two acts most likely to be affected by soundbleed booked on the same day, this would solve the problem. The Outdoor and Mojave could start up immediately after, and there would be little turnover time on the Main since there's no real striking needed for Mangum.

No way Pulp is not on the main right before The Black Keys. That's a huge reunion, is billed high enough, and is incredibly accessible to just about anybody. They are made for the main. I can, however, easily see Refused on the Outdoor against SHM...virtually no shared fanbase, and they will both be loud enough to drown the other out, plus Refused is more of a niche...you either want to see them, or you don't.

Well it's not. Especially putting them up against Swedish House Mafia. I think it is sort of a slap in the face, to put a big reunion like that opposite something that is going to draw a much bigger crowd. Pulp deserves a big crowd and the best way to guarantee that is to put them on the main stage before the headliner. Plus when was the last time the first three names on the bill conflicted? 2008? and that was because Roger Waters had nearly a 3 hr set and the curfew was still midnight back then.
Well, they definitely deserve better than the short set they will get given their main stage billing, and there's not exactly much crossover between the SHM and Pulp crowds, and the slap in the face already came in the form of them being billed under both The Black Keys and Swedish House Mafia. And the crowd will be horrendous for Pulp since everyone up front will just be waiting for the derp to follow. That having been said, I still think that they will definitely play the main.

    Miike Snow vs Radiohead? Mehh.

Not sure about Justice vs Dr. Dre&Snoop. I'm seeing something similar to 2009 and having only a tent and Sahara open during the headliner.

I could see them doing something like that again. (Dead Weather overlapped into Tiesto)
On the other hand, Flogging Molly was on the Outdoor during Chems last year.

But I could see Rufused play the Outdoor into SHM.

Refused closing the outdoor against SHM makes a ton of sense.

Yeah, but I don't think their whole set would be during SHM.
Flogging Molly were billed lower when they played their whole set during Chems.

I like this a lot better than a full conflict. I think it makes a lot of sense, actually. I'm assuming SHM takes 30-40 mins to setup, so Refused conflicts for maybe 20-30 minutes, and then a silent outdoor. Tents still going, and Amon Tobin in the Sahara.

I love this time of year.

Isn't this exactly what happened to Public Image Limited.

That's not a slap in the face, it's just reality. Both The Black Keys and Swedish House Mafia are bigger than Pulp in the United States. Also I highly doubt people will camp out for Swedish House Mafia that early. That would probably mean they'd have to miss Afrojack in order to do that.

...and people who like The Black Keys can't like Pulp why? I could easily see people who are there to see Black Keys enjoying Pulp's set and that's part of the fun of reunion acts. I remember plenty of people in 2007 at the main stage there to see Interpol and had no clue who Jesus and Mary Chain were and they ended up becoming JAMC fans by the end of the set.

There will also be plenty of people who will be sticking around at the main stage after Arctic Monkeys in order to see Pulp.

I think Refused on the outdoor during SHM makes perfect sense, with Amon Tobin in the Sahara and then a viable option or two in the other tents for those that don't want EDM or hardcore.

I still think The Arctic Monkeys are a possibility to close the outdoor. Having them play the main stage would mean they would have an almost identical set time as when they last played in 2007. Having them close is a nice alternative for those who don't want to watch EDM and a nice follow up to The Black Keys. Although Arctic Monkeys leading up to Pulp seems awfully nice as well.

And why can't they have the same slot they had 5 years ago?

Also, Arctic Monkeys > Pulp makes a lot of sense

I honestly think Arctic Monkeys --> Pulp --> The Black Keys --> Swedish House Mafia on the main makes so much sense due to billing and audience that I don't know why it's being contested. Refused beginning their outdoor closing set the second The Black Keys end (and then the Outdoor is silent), Afrojack during the Black Keys with a 30 minute set up time to allow for the SHM exodus and Amon Tobin to set up for his Sahara close. I would say a rapper in the Mojave or Gobi during all of this hardcore/EDM madness but Kendrick Lamar screams early day to me. Probably something indie instead. I'm going to see if I can work something out for Friday.

You are right, it isn't a rule. Although if I remember correctly, Paull Tollett did mention that they like to mix things up by having repeat artists play different stages or different times to make in more unique. I specifically remember him mentioning how he had to convince Cafe Tacuba to play the main stage for that very reason when they wanted to play the outdoor theatre in 2008.

Cat Power? Sure. Don't you think M83 is too electronic influenced to close out with SHM and Amon Tobin going at the same time though (theoretically)? M83 is far from EDM, but I'd imagine the overlap is there. I'm hoping M83 will reprise Cut Copy's Mojave slot from last year, but think sunset on the Outdoor also works.

    Maybe Death Grips?

Also how would both M83 and Cat Power close out tents? They both are too big for The Gobi.
