Sly Stone was a no show at Gobi

Goldenvoice officials says Sly Stone is on his way to the Empire Polo Club.
He's just about an hour and 45 minutes late for his gig.
Stone, who is so reclusive he's been called the Howard Hughes of popular music, was supposed to perform his first full concert with his legendary Sly and the Family Stone since 1972 at 7 p.m. in the small Gobi Tent.
People had wondered why Goldenvoice put one of the biggest reunion concerts in pop music history in the smallest venue at the Empire Polo Club.
Now we know.
A festival official said outside of the Gobi that he had heard at 7:30 p.m. that Sly was 40 miles away.
Goldenvoice official Stuart Ross said that wasn't exactly right, but he had heard that Sly was on his way.
Unfortunately, he said he couldn't get through to him on his AT&T cell phone.
Family Stone drummer Greg Errico, who has tried to facilitate reunions with Sly before, couldn't be reached on his cell phone.
He had been optimistic that this long-awaited concert was going to happen because Sly set up three days of rehearsal with original band members coming from all over California.
British electro-pop singer Little Boots went on in place of Sly & the Family Stone shortly after 7 p.m. and she was the last scheduled performer in the Gobi Tent.
Sly and the Family Stone roadies were told to hang tight and that the enigmatic band leader and his multi-ethnic, multi-gender group would perform.
Fans were told to hang out at the tent for Sly, but many filed away in disappointment.
"I just can't sacrifice (missing) Thom Yorke in the off-chance he shows up," said Frank Nojica,who was standing second row center when the announcement came that Sly and the Family Stone had been postponed.

Now we're hearing that Sly is actually going on at 10:30 p.m. in the Mojave Tent, which puts him up against Gorillaz on the Main Stage.

So I went to the Gobi 3 sets ahead of time so I get a sweet spot. They set up all Sly's equipment & did sound checks. A guy comes out & says "are you ready to get funky? Well, you'll have to do it later, because Sly has postponed his appearance. It will be after Little Boots." After a solid round of booing, the tent emptied in a hurry. After Little Boots, someone announced that Sly would be "at the next tent over" (Mohave). So we all go dashing over and some other group is setting up.

Sly was THE ACT I was most looking forward to. Since Coachella was a clusterfuck all weekend, this just makes sense. Total sense. They set up all his stage probably for contractual reasons. They fucking knew he would NOT be there, yet they didn't have the courtesy to tell the audience. NO damn courtesy. The fact he "postponed" was not a surprise, as Sly has a 40+ year history of no-shows. But GV, have some respect & KEEP US INFORMED.

I had a great day, seeing all sorts of fun acts, but I was not going to be wait for 2, 3, or 4 hours, just see if, when, and where Sly would show up. If he does show up & you get to see him, I'll be jealous. But sometimes you have to know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold'em, and this was enough to send me home early.

I apologize to the "Fab 40+ Group" people who called & messaged me for a meet-up. I was in the Gobi staking out my sweet spot for Sly. Had I known, I would have met you guys. It'll have to wait another year, dammit.
