Thread: Tiniest crowds

    Default Tiniest crowds

Last year I took a huge hit for a girl and saw Marina and the Diamonds with her instead of Cut Copy...the crowd was painfully small, maybe a fifth full of the Gobi. What's the smallest crowd you've seen?

[Partly interested because if the set times are the same both weekends, I could see acts finding a way to not perform the second weekend if nobody shows up to their show.]

I saw Interpol while the Chili Peppers were going on, whatever year that was. Very small crowd, but totally worth it. Intimate. Of course all the crowds were smaller back then.

Big Audio Dynamite during Mumford and Sons was surprisingly small. Could walk right up to the front.

I walked through Electric Touch last year after seeing Elbow on my way to The Kills and it looked like there was maybe 50 people in the gobi.

I was at Marina and the Diamonds, she was very good (minus the delay in the beginning and this group of horrible people that were screaming at the top of their lungs in my ear) the crowd wasn't as small as Eliza Doolittle's. Both good sets though : )

I would have like to have seen Marina, but there was no way I was missing Cut Copy.

I can't stand her songs, but her vocals were spot on so if you like her recorded stuff you would have loved her live. Very theatrical too, and (I mean this in no disrespect, just thought it was funny) she had what was hands down the gayest crowd of any set I went to that weekend, which was a weekend that included Robyn and about ten minutes of Scissor Sisters.

But seriously, still kicking myself for not going to Cut Copy. I saw them at Treasure Island and they killed it, but the crowd energy was nowhere near what I've seen in Coachella videos.

I loved the costume change with the giant hamburger, that was pretty classic haha. Yes, her vocals were definitely spot on.

In 05? It was crazy where I was in the front, I just assumed the tent was full for that set.

The Orb and Throbbing Gristle both played to tiny crowds. Modeselektor played to a nearly-empty tent Sunday 2008. Dwight Yoakam in 09 also had a very very small crowd at the Outdoor.

That's a lie. There were at least a few hundred of us there when Patton mentioned something about a cock in Gwyneth Paltrow's ass.

People are just too lazy to get in early sometimes. Great set and way to start the day.

yeah, don't think anyone was standing. I wasn't. But it was a wake-up-and-smell-the-coffee kind of sunshiny opener.

I liked em, but couldn't help thinking "damn honkies always stealing other genre's. Why couldn't it be a real mexican mariachi band led by a beautiful, long raven haired seniorita? Not a bald white guy.". They were good though. Copy well. Not the first to jump on that train...bought this vinyl from the Goodwill a few months ago (it's more acupulco hotel lobby lounge music, but do incorporate elements of horns and such):

Not true at all. It was a small crowd... but not that small.

I was walking around during the Killers and I remember their crowd being epically tiny. 20-30 people is a good guess. I ended up seeing Mastodon who were rad at the same time (I think Mojave). Paul Weller in 2009 is also one I always think of. He played on the outdoor and there were not enough fans watching to stretch the length of the stage, maybe 50 at most.

Yea, I saw this in person. It was a ghost town, kind of a sad turn out. I only walked passed it though. It was strange to see so little people in a tent with a a band on stage. The cure and a late Sunday spot killed em.

Well, there's that, but it might also have had something to do with the fact that they are a band whose catalog includes spoken word based songs about ripping a fetus from a pregnant woman's stomach with a knife. Kind of a niche act to begin with, regardless of billing or historical significance.

I felt bad for Phantogram last year. They had to compete with Ratatat, Chromeo, Chase & Status, and the Strokes. I think that'll reign as the worst conflict [for me] for awhile, but suffice to say, their crowd was pretty small.

their paycheck isnt dependent on the size of the crowd. plus how big of a crowd would they play outside of coachella?
