Hey, the new Toys That Kill album is pretty damn awesome if you're into that sort of thing. The album release show in Pedro a few weeks ago was some of the most fun I've had at a show in awhile.

Yessssssssssssssssssssssssss! I am really not sure any album will over take Celebration Rock as my album of the year. It just makes me feel too good when I listen to it.

Celebration Rock makes me feel like listening to Celebration Rock again to see why it didn't have a similar effect on me that it did on the rest of you.

To me, the title Celebration Rock tells you everything you need to know about the album. The album is celebration of life, of death, of friends, of drinking, of good times, of bad times, of music, of rock, of punk. The band consists of two people, but the album sounds like 5 guys playing rock music made for stadiums. The guitars are beautifully layered and full of youthful energy. The music is dynamic, energetic and vital. Their voices are proud and triumphant. To me, these guys had a clear vision of what they wanted their album to sound like, and they went out and achieved that. Every single part of this album excites me to the core and when people say they care for it, it perplexes me greatly. Perhaps try giving it a couple more listened based on what I have said here. Maybe it will strike a chord for you too.

    From Pitchfork's Primavera coverage:
Right before his set, Japandroids frontman and guitarist Brian King told the sound man, "I want this to be loud as fuck." Really, there is no way to hear the band's existential 2012 epic Celebration Rock, which comprised much of the set, than at an absolutely obliterating volume. He added, "I need a beer. And a shot of Jameson." Also appropriate.
Early prediction: what Titus Andronicus was at Coachella 2011 for a lot of people on this board, Japandroids will be for 2013.

I'd argue that part of the genius of the album is that it's not just about having fun, it's about having fun in spite of and in perfect awareness of the fact that everything about adulthood is fundamentally fucked up and/or not fun.

Listened to Lex HIves on the way up to the sb bowl and the album has its good and bad moments. There are some songs I really like and then there are a couple that are annoying.

Neil Young is going to embark on a tour of baseball stadiums wherein he will sing the Star Spangled Banner and come back at the 7th and sing God Bless America. After the games, he will then come back and sing Kumbaya.

What the fuck is wrong with that guy. "Americana" is utter ass.

I had never heard these guys and they opened for the Avengers last week. They were great. Haven't heard the records, but I bought a copy for my friend for her birthday, so I'll listen to it eventually.

Their songs crush me in really good ways.

People keep writing about how much better the lyrics are on the new record. Honestly, I thought the lyrics were great on the first album. Simple, yes. Repetitive, yes. But they were great at articulating very specific, intense feelings, and matching those feelings with musical moments that intensify them. "It's raining in Vancouver/But I don't give a fuck/Because I'm alone with you tonight" is beautiful in its simplicity. Anyone who has been in love can understand that.

That said, the lyrics are much better-composed on the new album.

"It's a lifeless life with no/fixed address to give/But you're not mine to die for anymore/So I must live"? Killer.

"What if I had all of the answers/and you had the body you wanted/would we love with a legendary fire?" Devastating.

Tom, think the Replacements in terms of feel, not in terms of sound. Their music is really life-affirming. When I fantasize about the perfect rock 'n' roll show, I picture Titus Andronicus or Japandroids as the band playing.

Liars are a fantastic band... but holy hell this new album is quite something. I have listened to the thong about 3 or 4 times through now, and I think it may be Liars best album. I like all of their albums a fair bit, but every album of theirs has at least 1 or 2 songs I skip. Not this one though. Every song is solid and I find the album continuously gets better, song after song.

The debut from Exitmusic is fucking amazing. So dark, powerful, and reaching, yet always seemingly on the verge of total collapse. The singer has some really unique quivering vocals that I've really fallen in love with the more I listen.

This year is going to be so insane for releases by the time it's done. It's like all of the bands that put out great albums in '09 and '10 decided to join forces and release albums this year. I imagine next year will be the year of the breakout artists, chock full of great debut albums from bands we don't know about at the moment.
