I've got a lot of love for the Maccabees, and they always seemed like a band who were gonna find their way somewhere special, but this ain't doing it for me. All just feels a bit limp and unengaging. The Foals comparison is a good one, but I think Total Life Forever is a much better stab in this general direction.

The new Van Halen album is really good. Evidently the music came from demos from the 70s (the vocal melodies/lyrics are new), so it sounds like a comfortable, ballsy Van Halen, rather than a Van Halen trying really hard to be their old selves. "Tattoo" has some awful lyrics, but it mostly rocks. Honestly, the album is well worth listening to.

Locked Groove - Rooted is a pretty great techno EP released in 2012. Fans of acid-techno etc, I'd check it out.

So I discussed this with my buddy who's been doing peace corp. in Nicaragua, and we both agreed that, while good, it was a definite step down from the last album. It's less accessible, and, with the major exception of America, nothing quite sticks out as much as, say, Eid Maw Clack Shaw or however you spell it.

Which is to say that Bill Callahan is, at this point, listened to by his fans and nobody else, so it's time to judge him by his own scale. And this was a good, but not great, Bill release.

Im going to be honest. Apocalypse was first post-smog Callahan album I've listened to. it seems i need to check out his previous solo efforts.

And i completely disagree about America being the most accessible song on that album. The subtle changes of the monotonous guitar riff of that song makes it one of the most difficult of the album for me.

I just finished listening to Windy & Carl's - We Will Always Be and I have to say I was waiting for something as ambient and ethereal as this to come out for ages. The opener track is the sole song that has some structure to it, with its acoustic guitars, after that, it feels like taking a deep dive in the ocean, drowning yourself in drone-ambient soundscapes reminiscent of shoegaze bands. Imagine an extended version of 'to here knows when' lasting the whole album.

Great background music for reading or studying.

^ Loving it. Reminiscent of The Field at times. Also evokes the less gratuitous sounds of Gui Boratto. Melodic sort of atmospheric techno w/ an occasional ambient sensibility.

^ For me, this track captures an arresting sense of sadness when viewed in concert w/ the official music video, which consists of little more than tweeked out adolescents at scuzzy raves. Well worth a watch.

After one listen, I find The 2 Bears release to be pleasant. Nothing more, nothing less. It might be perfect relaxing music while sitting on a beach in the Caribbean. However, it doesn't jump out at me while sitting at my desk working.

Agreed. Some catchy tunes, but mostly forgettable.

I just finished listening to this, and I found it very enjoyable. Like Ross said, Melodic and atmospheric. But not just that, it was kind of all over the place, but in a very good way. It was never in your face, but it never fades to the background either. Will listen again.

I didn't even realize John Talabot had a full length coming until I checked P4K this morning. Digging it so far, but I'm a bit surprised at the darker tone considering how blissed out his EPs were.

I'm a big fan of Bill's work, and would say give Sometimes I Wish I Were Eagle a try. And, speaking about last years albums that I keep revisiting Sufjan Steven's The Age of Adz is one I keep coming back to. I know it's bloated at times, but there's so much to find upon multiple listens.
