I listened to it a couple of weeks ago expecting to hate it based on some videos I've seen of him live, but positive reviews and the fact that he produced some of the best tracks on Gonjasufi's A Sufi & A Killer made me give it a proper chance. It's a nice mix of crate-digging instrumental hip-hop, Brainfeeder oddball electronics, and cross-genre downtempo grooves. The list of guest appearances is about equal to the number of tracks and includes Gonjasufi, Daedelus, and Shigeto. It's one of those really fun, wildly eclectic albums where just about everything is thrown into the mix with creative abandon, switching gears every two minutes or so. Check it out.
He's always fun to watch live. I feel like he does a line every five minutes. Hope he doesn't break his neck anytime soon...

Circle Takes The Square's long-coming 2nd full length album Deompositions Volume 1 finally came out last night and it is truly amazing, easily one of my favorite albums of the year. I used to associate them with the hardcore/metalcore scene, but this album feels much more to me like a black metal/prog-metal album. It's really incredible.

Some year-end list research has led me to a handful of 2012 releases which I missed initially but have really enjoyed over the past few weeks:

Group Rhoda - Out of Touch, Out of Mind: a must-listen for fans of Peaking Lights, and would have certainly been a fantastic summer album to melt away to in the heat.

Horrid Red - Celestial Joy: 80s synth-pop meets no-wave meets lo-fi; unsettling, but in the best way possible.

Jam City - Classical Curves: been mentioned by a few others in some of the year-end threads, but a fantastically groovy electronic/dance album.

Ricardo Villalobos - Dependent and Happy: a bit of a return-to-form for a minimal techno master, with over 2 hours of music spread across three LPs.

I'm also about to dig into the Lee Gamble and Terrence Dixon releases too, as those two have received a lot of praise.

    Congrats to Mr. Jack White

Third Man Records in conjunction with Columbia Records is proud to announce that Jack White's album "Blunderbuss" is the biggest selling vinyl album of 2012 according to Nielsen Soundscan's vinyl charts with over 33,000 copies sold.

Knocking the Beatles' "Abbey Road" off the top spot (a position it had held the previous three years), "Blunderbuss" sales are the highest for a new album (not a catalog album) since Soundscan began specifically tracking vinyl in 2008.

White is currently nominated for three Grammys from "Blunderbuss", including Album of the Year.

This doesn't make sense. Isn't Abbey Road a catalog album?

And apparently I need to listen to this NHK shit.

Bryan, you've heard at least one track from the first Dance Classics album - it was playing over the PA at Human Resources before the start of the Mark McGuire show. I remember because the album didn't click for me until then, and after that I went home and listened and it all made sense.

    But yeah, it's great.
Arcade Fire - Sir Richard Bishop, Bill Orcutt - Spoon - Paul McCartney - Steve Gunn - Beserktown Fest - Slint - Sleep - Swans - Owen Pallett - Neutral Milk Hotel - Chris Thile & Edgar Meyer - Bobby Bradford Quartet - Matana Roberts - Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Braxton - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Songs for Unseen Warhol Films - Ben Frost, Tim Hecker, Pete Swanson - Ryoji Ikeda - Slowdive - A Winged Victory for the Sullen - John Zorn Marathon

Yeah, Dance Classics Vol. 1 totally lives up to it's title. Well except the danceability party maybe. I still need to give Vol. 2 a listen. Thanks to Jared for bringing it to my attention initially.

Aliment - Holy Slap: Garage punk from Barcelona. The songwriting is simplistic, but very catchy choruses. Fun album to listen to driving around, but it made me wish it was summer. Solid album.

Just now checking out Chelsea Wolfe's Unknown Rooms: A Collection Of Acoustic Songs that was released back in October.Really really good, some of the most haunting songs I've heard in a long time. This album can make your heart hurt (in a good way?). Listen to it

7/11 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds @ The Shrine Auditorium
    7/19 X (Acoustic) @ Pappy & Harriet's

    9/11 Swans @ The Roxy
