Tom Scharpling probably isn't the most reliable source for ATP news.

I didn't post it because he had news. I posted it because I agreed with his opinion. Blaming the move, at least in part, on a lack of hotels in AP was ridiculous. I don't know anyone who had trouble finding a room last year. Finding affordable, nearby hotels in NYC, on the other hand ...

he shares the station and sometimes the show with a lot of bands included on the lineup. I'm sure he's good friends with Reigning Sound

Hotels in the area were gouging this year, though. I know the Empress and at least a couple others were charging more than double last year's rates.

He's also totally over-reactionary to every that happens in his life.

edit: I also really enjoy The Best Show, Scharpling's thoughts, etc, but I can't imagine that he'd ever not side with Asbury Park in any case.

When i booked my tattoo appointment for asbury park, the dudes there were telling me how some of their clients who were in town for bamboozle were paying almost 400 a night for small rooms at the berkeley. I could definitely see them and atp not coming to an agreement. Probably why we never heard back about accommodations until now.

Just spent the money I had earmaked for ATP on an upper-level membership at the Seattle Art Museum. Helloooo drinking cheap wine at exhibit openings with blue-haired old ladies for the next 12 months.

I admittedly will be happy to have the extra money. Especially since it makes FYF possible for me.

Yeah, the more I think about the more I wonder why I don't make these sorts of decisions more often. I mean, I am extremely pleased with this alternative.

Also, I think I just need to go to more music festivals you go to Bryan, because your sheer enthusiasm for a good set easily increases my enjoyment twofold.

so who is actually still going to this? I'm gonna stick with ATP through the dark ages here and hope for the best. if I'm unhappy with this one then 2013 will probably be out for me.

I was wondering the same thing.

If I were over there, I'd still go. But, incompetence like that doesn't breed confidence enough to get me to expend around a grand to get there and stay there.

Yeah, I've come to the decision I am going to opt out as well. Still really want to go, but I know I'll save a lot of money by doing FYF and one of the Animal Collective shows instead.

Lotta pissed off sentiments right now. wait though, bet it's nothing compared to tomorrow when we get announcements about the 1st acts booked for an amazing Shellac-curated Nightmare Before Christmas.

And sorry to throw more wood on the conspiracy theory bonfire, but how does this one sound...Shellac doesn't play ATP NY in order to increase NBC's appeal to "destination festival-goers." at all plausible??

been quietly content through a lot of the groans and gripes about lineups, announcement delays etc. None of it bothered me much but this latest development has put me firmly in the "disappointed" and "no longer going" camps.

Part of me feels they've done too much good over the years and i still wish them to succeed with this latest move, but at the same time I kind of want them to catch wind of a negative backlash, with the slight hope that maybe it'll show them how they've lost their way with this, and maybe they'll salvage what they can for this year...otherwise the next.

Plenty more (mostly negative) thoughts to share.....

I wrote them an email telling them that I really loved and appreciated the shows they had put on, but how disappointed and frustrated I felt as a fan and customer after these developments. I don't know if they'll care, but I thought that, since they always seemed so interested in the fans before, that they might care what disappointed one fan had to say.

    That statement finally arrived.

    "Statement Regarding Changes Within ATP:

We have now completed a restructuring of the business of ATP Concerts Limited. This involved the Voluntary Liquidation of ATP Concerts Limited and transfer of its assets (including the rights to the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, label, and shows) to a new company called Willwal Limited. We will also be dividing the business into three different companies; ATP Festivals, ATP Recordings and ATP Shows.

The team however, remain the same, having been transferred over to Willwal Limited - and the festival is still called All Tomorrow's Parties. All future events will continue as scheduled on the dates advertised and all tickets for those events are still valid.

ATP remains unwaveringly committed to hosting world class events. Since our inception it has been our mission to provide quality concerts for discerning music lovers around the world - our number one priority has always been the bands and the fans and we work hard, sometimes under difficult circumstances, to achieve the highest standards possible. It is a tough climate out there, but this restructuring will ensure that ATP is around for many more years to come. We thank the fans who have stood by us over the years and especially during this recent time of reorganisation.

Other news we are announcing today is that the U.S. event on September 21 - 23 is to be moved from Asbury Park, New Jersey to Manhattan, New York. This is due to logistical reasons and a full press release regarding the move will be posted here. Anyone unable to attend due to this change will be able to request a full refund.

We have many exciting developments and opportunities available to us that will be announced over the coming months. We will be continuing the work we have done over the past 13 years and would like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past week - we apologise that this statement has taken longer than anticipated to be released (due to needing certain legal clearances) - we thank you again for your patience and apologise for any unnecessary worry caused.

On Monday we will announce the first bands for this December's Nightmare Before Christmas festival curated by Shellac.

    Yours sincerely,

    Barry Hogan ATP"

Hitting this would involve nothing more than a single subway transfer* for me, but I'm far less enthused about the whole thing than I was about getting back on that NJ Transit train for a weekend at Asbury Park. I may still go, but I'm already disheartened to know so many of you good people won't be joining me.

    * I guess I could also walk across the Williamsburg Bridge if the weather is agreeable.

I'm done hating on ATP for this. They produced 2 of the best music festivals I've ever attended and for that I respect them. I'm so grateful I was able to attend last years installment at Asbury. That was one of the most entertaining weekends of my life and the setting at Asbury was exquisite. I wish them the best but its highly unlikely for me to ever attend one in Manhattan.

FYF has, for my money, a better lineup than ATP does. Plus it's cheaper and they're very active in keeping fans informed of what's happening. They're getting my refund money.
Just letting you know. Factory Floor just signed to DFA last week and they're finishing up their debut LP which is coming out in January 2013. They were planning on doing mini US tour around ATP but they'll wait till next year when they have something released to come back here again. So it wasn't ATP's fault! With Louis Ck, he announced his own tour and playing 14 shows in NYC & 2 shows in Atlantic City. This saved ATP some $$$ and Louis CK fans can go see him when he's touring around the country starting in the fall.

Comparing FYF and ATP are irrelevant in my opinion (totally different festival). FYF's capacity will be over 20K right? ATP will have at most 3K this year. A major factor about ATP is you can see bands up close and not have to worry about major crowd issues. Another thing will be the people attending both of these festivals. I can guarantee that people attending ATP will be more respectful and not taking shit pictures with their iphones every second (Looking forward to dust storms during FYF!). What about overlapping set times? ATP does pretty well balancing everything out while we're gonna be juggling through couple stages for FYF! Yea it sucks that they waited this long to announce everything but give them another chance

Nightmare Before Xmas curated by Shellac Of North America
November 30th - 2nd December 2012 at Pontins, Camber Sands, UK
    - Wire, Mission Of Burma, Scrawl, The Ex and more confirmed -

Last month to celebrate a return to the festival's original home; the recently refurbished Pontins Camber Sands Holiday Camp; All Tomorrow's Parties announced a Nightmare Before Christmas festival event curated by SHELLAC OF NORTH AMERICA to help celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band.

We look forward to returning to the festival's spiritual birthplace for an incredible weekend - Shellac headline and choose the rest of the 35 band bill playing across the event on the venue's excellent indoor stages featuring award winning sound, with DJs until late, Cinema and much more.

Two thirds of the event's tickets have been sold in the month since our initial announcement, with some apartment sizes now gone. The first artists for the event are announced today, and here is how the line-up now looks with much more to come:

    SHELLAC OF NORTH AMERICA
    WIRE
    MISSION OF BURMA
THE EX + BRASS UNBOUND (Mats Gustafsson/Ken Vandermark/Roy Paci/Wolter Wierbos)

I like that Spooks feels bmack's decision is based on not being adequately informed on the advantages of an ATP festival.

Its a given that any music festivals lineup is subject to change. I still dont understand tho what legal hold they had on announcing the move. That was definitely a very poor business decision holding that info from the public for so long.
