It was "recorded live to acetate". So there's that.

Frank Sinatra - In the Wee Small Hours (op mono)
    Various - Fantasia (1957 triple-LP)
Poco - Picking Up the Pieces

    RSD:
Grateful Dead - Family Dog at the Great Highway
This set was audience-recorded on non-professional gear but the tape hiss is outshined by stellar music. Plus, six songs with Pigpen doing his thing acoustic? Sold.

Never done a trade before, but hit up two shops to get rid of some 45s I had gathered from an old haul. Picked up:
Clouds Taste Metallic (reissue) - The Flaming Lips
    Personal Record - Eleanor Friedberger
High Land, Hard Rain - Aztec Camera

Ok, I think I should upgrade my system. I'm thinking I should stop using equipment I got from dying relatives. I'm not an audiophile, but it would be nice to get the best sound from the newer releases I pick up. Any budget-friendly suggestions.

Did your relatives at least have good shit? I very much prefer old analog setups to nearly anything current.

If you have the money, I suggest the package sale Zu Audio is offering on their site. $899 for a ridiculous preamp, fucking awesome floor speakers, and some cable or some shit. If I had an extra grand laying around I would have already bought one. Great young company making some ridiculous hi-fi/audiophile gear. And they have phenomenal taste in vinyl.

Unfortunately, I've never used anything of exceptional quality to spin my tunes.

    Anything worthwhile under $400?

Where did you get the Cheaters single and Hivern Remixes? Seems to be sold out through young turks, and Hivern.

Traded in CDs at Amoeba Hollywood today, got cash (apparently they give quite a bit more for cash trade in than Amoeba SF or Berkeley because, "Those stores are doing pretty poorly," so work on your buying, Bay Area people) and these records:

    Mortals - Death Ritual EP
The Body - Christs, Redeemers (white records)

Discogs for the former, the label for the latter.

Part of the problem is both of those stores kind of suck right now, at least in terms of having the right shit in stock. San Francisco has declined BIG TIME since I started going in 2003. Berkeley is still pretty okay, but it is hit or miss. I usually have to go to a combo of Berkeley Amoeba and Rasputin to get things I'm looking for, and unless it is new dance or jazz or something, I can usually just go to 1-2-3-4 Go! and find exactly what I need.

I noticed that when I visited both recently. I used to think SF Amoeba's metal selection was the cat's pajamas and that Berkeley had the best punk section, but comparing those to Amoeba Hollywood weeks apart, I found that Hollywood was just destroying them in both. As well as the regular vinyl section, the clearance section and all of the various genres. Not to mention the tons of people in Hollywood buying things. I dunno, I think the LA market is just doing better in general, as it seems like the small, niche stores like Origami, Vacation, Mono and Permanent are doing pretty damn well for themselves.

We have lots of small stores here that do a good job. The big ones have declined significantly in the 10 years I've been seriously buying records. Also, it is worth pointing out that the used selection is AWFUL in SF, while Berkeley's is much better.

Oh I love the small stores in the bay, but I've never seen as many people in 1-2-3-4 or (the one time I was there) Aquarius as any of the aforementioned LA stores. I wonder honestly if the glut of stores in the bay has created a problem where nobody does great business because it's spread out amongst so many different businesses.

Man, if that is their total label output for 2013, they kinda had a slow year. 12 albums, a full fourth of which were Sonic Youth solo projects?

A good year though -- what they did release was mostly essential.

I agree. I used to find really great stuff at Amoeba SF but the selection for the last 18 months has been dreadful. If I even do stop in, I stick exclusively to clearance.

And Godinez, what audio gear are you looking to upgrade with that $400? Turntable, receiver, speakers, or all three? If all three, you'll need to get creative. A good cartridge will elevate a shitty table. A good cartridge & good speakers will elevate an average receiver, IMO. However, an amazing table is worthless if you have a piece of shit cartridge & receiver/amp. The good news is that you have tons of options out there. Check Craigslist, I often see great audiophile shit selling at discount prices.

Apparently, I missed the first pressing of Sky Ferreira's album on vinyl over the weekend madness (site says sold out at least). Hoping for a second printing or a cheap ebay grab now...

I'm good with the speakers I have. I definitely need a new/better receiver. What should I look for when it comes to cartridges?

You have a lot of options. One of the current "standard" cartridges out there is the Shure m97e or xe or something. A solid cartridge with great sound at the price and I believe you can even upgrade the stylus. There's an Ortofon cart that I see around a lot as well. Personally, I'm obsessed with a line of hifi cartridges Stanton did in the 70s & 80s and stick exclusively to those. I dig the sound. The key is finding what sound you dig. Do a little research on models & consumer reviews & whatnot. I'm not as up to date on current stuff, so someone else should jump in here but I bet you can get something solid for $100 or less.
