I had a Pioneer PL-12d for a while that I absolutely loved, but I think that model is older than what you're talking about. If it's Made in Japan and the price is right, get it. As far as Pioneer goes, Made in Japan >>>> Made in USA, imo.

Thanks Greg. It comes with a Concord CIM-50 cartridge with a diamond tipped stylus too, if that makes a difference (never really heard of it before). He's asking 150, and I'm going to try to talk him down as much as I can, but is that too high of a starting price? It looks clean in the pictures, has the dust cover and is (so I'm told, anyways) in good working order.

EDIT - I'm also looking at a Marantz 6110 with a new belt and a Shure M104E cart with a new stylus for 100, but the auto function isn't working. Any advice on which would be the better option?

Marantz, all day. Especially with that cartridge. It's a P-mount cartridge, but the underlying body is identical to the m97 series and can very easily be upgraded or even cross-graded with a variety of different needles. The price does seem a little low, though, so I'm concerned about condition of the table. If auto-function is the only thing not working, then it's a solid deal. Get him to send you a video of it tracking so you can see/hear how it's working. But yeah, Marantz + Shure m104e for $100 is a great deal so long as it's working.

I've got a Pioneer table from the early 80s and I absolutely love it. It was put through the motions with three kids in the house and then sat for about a decade and a half when my uncle switched to CDs and it still runs pretty much perfectly.

Bored on a thursday record nerd question: What is your best box set you own?

This was inspired by listening to a box set I found at a local thrift store, the Greatest 64 Motown Songs. Every single song on the box is essential. That said, I don't think it's the best box I own. That would have to be the Giants of Jazz 3LP collection of Louis Armstrong recordings released in 1980 that I found at Amoeba earlier this year. It's a spectacular overview of his jazz repertoire, not touching at all on the vocal pop records he did toward the end of his career that found him a resurgence in popularity. It starts with him as a sideman and truly blossoms with the Hot Fives and Sevens, before expanding with his orchestra. Every song is essential and so full of life and melody that I can't imagine anyone disliking it.

Agreed on both. That Motown set is an essential for fans of soul music. And word to Louis Armstrong. I can't fucking stand nearly anything did in the 60s & 70s, all that stupid fucking grinning Uncle Tom vocal pop shit. His work with King Oliver and the stuff he did as a bandleader is just impossibly good jazz. When I got really into Roy Eldridge I worked backwards from him and discovered what Satch was all about.

And on that note, the best set I own is the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz. 6 LPs running from Scott Joplin & Jellyroll Morton to Coltrane & Ornette Coleman. Essential shit.

    hmmmmmmm

either my Wheedle's Groove singles boxset or the Fela Questlove Box Set. Wheedle's groove has some brilliant Seattle funk and soul, and the Fela is just fela...

edit: I lied. The best one I own is probably the newest one I've added; David Mancso's the Loft. So awesome

I am looking this up and I can find a few clean copies for less than 10. Looks like I'm gonna hunt it down soon. (And, I need to get you money if you still have those records I asked about months ago. Lets talk.)

And yeah, the Fela box sets are so killer. I've got the ?uestlove one and it's so goddamn great. It's also selling for well over the sale price already. I want to get the Ginger Baker one when I have money again.

Yes, I still have Stones, Beatles, and Springsteen LPs for you. I was actually thinking of texting you about them yesterday.

    This was very expensive!

Yeah, yeah, I know, you've been waiting forever for this. Well, it's almost here. Here's the details:

Factory Floor's Debut LP comes in a US-exclusive pink jacket with a diecut FF logo, and orders from DFA Direct will come on limited edition light pink vinyl.

The CD comes in a custom US-exclusive square 4-panel digipak. These came out super nice, if I may say so myself.

Ordering a physical format gets you a bonus limited edition pink enamel 1.5" Factory Floor logo badge. It's an edition of 100, while supplies last.

Your physical order gets you your choice of and MP3 or WAV download, which I will personally send out at midnight EST on September 9th.

I picked up Van Morrison's Moondance at the Berkeley flea market over the weekend from a guy with a great selection at reasonable prices. Recommend anyone in the area stopping by there, he's there most weekends if he isn't travelling to buy/trade records.

Based on the catalog number it's the same company that did the boots for Frank Ocean. If so, it'll be really high quality sound for a bootleg and you won't regret the purchase. I have both Frank Ocean records and they sound great.

There has to be some story with Kanye and vinyl at this point. Watch the Throne was seemingly only sold as some sort of absurd $100+ gold embossed luxury edition. Cruel Summer is still on preorder at Amazon, etc. And no one has said anything about Yeezus yet.

Well, and he only did a limited edition release of 808s and Heartbreaks, only released Graduation to his friends/family and only put out Fantasy in that wild, extravagant packaging. Really only the first two had normal releases.

I paid a premium for it, €38 plus shipping, totally worth it though. I had seen a normal black vinyl copy at the store but decided to go for this one instead
