Greg, the records came. Blonde on Blonde sounded fantastic. Really. Like hearing it for the first time. Haven't listened to Journey yet. Thanks again!

Hell yeah, sweet! I told you it sounded great. Even with the bit of wear on the discs, the music really leapt out me. Totally unexpected, I've played that album more times than I could hope to accurately count. That copy there, though, is a magic copy :-)

EDIT: Scored in clearance bins yesterday:

Little Feat - Waiting for Columbus (MFSL)
    Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors (flame cover)
Neil Young - Tonight's the Night (op)

    And Jose, empty your inbox.

Went to NYC last week... hit so many good stores. My two favorites were probably Jazz Record Center and Academy Records. Jazz Record Center is seriously overwhelming... Never seen that amount of rare jazz in one place. I went a little crazy, original unless otherwise stated.

Art Blakey - A Night at Birdland Volume 2
Horace Silver Quintet - Doin' The Thing
    Miles Davis - Volume 1
Jackie McLean - Swing Swang Swingin (RE)
Jay Jay Johnson - Volume 1
Jimmy Scott - The Source (White label promo)
Jutta Hipp - With Zoot Sims (RE)
    Lee Morgan - Indeed! (RE)
Sonny Stitt - Only the Blues (Japanese pressing with obi)
Stan Getz - Getz '57 (Japanese Pressing with obi)
Stan Getz - Interpretations #2 (Norgran OG, near mint)
Zoot Sims - New Beat Bossa Nova Vol. 2 (WLP, actually found this in Mercer Street records for 8 bucks, really stoked)

Nice. And I have that Marshall Tucker in my inventory, you could have had a copy for 50 cents.

Ha, I actually got it for 50 cents. Same with the Brubeck and Hooker.

And, if you haven't heard Beck-Ola, it's mostly the same group as on Trust, only with a more hard rock drummer. They're both killer records.

For awhile now I've been considering reorganizing my collection chronologically. Super nerdy, I know, but I feel like it'd give me a new way to approach the records. Has anyone ever done that with their collection?

Would you go alphabetical within each year? How do you do it now? The organization process would be a good way to remind yourself of what you have!

I re-organized by genre a month or two ago (which, in hindsight, was maybe not the best decision), but I did it for the same reason you're thinking, though - I needed a fresh way to pick things to listen to (although my selection isn't nearly as big as what you have haha).

A bit of an aside, but I have a friend who keeps his physical media in (for lack of a better term) "when I bought it" chronological order; in other words, it starts with the first CD he bought and ends with the most recent.

Hahaha, your friend's style was what they called "autobiographical" in High Fidelity.

I have mine mostly alphabetic with some genres pulled out right now, but I've had it that way for a few years and it feels like time to shake things up.

Within each year I'd go with release date by month, then within month if I can get that info, then alphabetically. Most of that is readily accessible on Discogs, and you can even view your collection in chronological order on the site.

Ah, I see you've gone into the chronological approach whole-hog - nicely done! If you have the time I'd say go for it; I don't think you'd necessarily get a bigger cross section of things to choose from compared to doing it alphabetically like you've done, but the re-shuffle would certainly force you to go through your collection in a much different way.

And I forgot about that part of High Fidelity! He moved to Chicago last summer so I'm curious how well he was able to keep it in order.

I think that would be an interesting approach. My collection is separated by genre, then alphabetized in each genre section, then chronologically within multiple releases from an artist or band.

Going alphabetically by album title would be a monumentally frustrating organization project but when done would really shake up your collection.

I always liked the autobiographical approach. mentally albums have such a tie to the period of time I got them. also, there's no questioning where something lives. there was a single concrete point in time you got it. if you order them chronologically and you have a reissue do you put it in the original date or the reissue date? if alphabetically by artist there are always questions of performer vs compser, and what to do with compliations. alphabetically by album title... well, who the hell does that anyway?

I'm going with the original dates, and for compilations of artists who were pre-album I went with the date of the last track. I'm also just doing alphabetic by year right now: otherwise it would be too much work.

That's exactly the point. A project to force you to conceive your collection differently. As for chronological, reissues go in the order of the original release. Shit, most folks don't even know a reissue from op. For comps I have a "Various Artists" section at the end of each genre. They are ordered alphabetically & chronologically in the case of multi-volume sets. And the only place where performer vs. arranger/composer comes up for me is Classical, which then essentially operates on a case-by-case basis. And it's even worse than that: Composer, Conductor, Ensemble, & featured soloist (if applicable). Or even title of the piece. Which takes precedence? Organizing classical is such a pain.
