Ah, speaking of 45s, let me know if you're still interested in selling some of those old singles you have.

$6. It is at least a $20 record. It is the ZE release too. The dude who owns this spot is super into prog and shit, so I don't think he knew what he had.

Yeah, I was excited. I need to make sure it plays okay, but it looked pretty good. Yesterday was one of the best days I've ever had in terms of finding awesome records I had been looking for for awhile now in good shape at decent prices. I had never seen the Patti Smith, Incredible String Band, Van Morrison or Bowie records used at any of the 4-5 shops I frequent.

A Sabbath record (I think the first one) and one other thing I didn't notice. I was bummed he got to the Sabbath first.

edit: so far so good on this new batch, $27 for around 110 45s. The first 10 were pretty beat up, and I started to worry. (damaged Jose Feliciano - Light My Fire, and an Aretha Franklin) But then I started to strike it rich. James Brown, Elton John, Michael Jackson. Finish after dinner....

Remember the rule, if you'll regret not having done so, buy it. Love that album, but not that much (yeah, I see it is only 1000 copies).

Decided against it because I found another record that I've been hunting for, and at a lower price:

Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Ragged Glory
Rapeman - Two Nuns and a Pack Mule
    REM - Chronic Town

It's pretty clear when a record is beat up or severely scratched; the most obvious things to look for are deep scratches across several grooves. Those are the ones that will cause your record to skip... Another thing to look at is the first groove itself which can be noticeably fucked up if the record wasn't taken care of.
I want to start listening to vinyl because my mom gave me some great old albums from her record collection. How much should I spend on a record player?

I'm comfortable with your pricing them out, I'm not trying to get them for free and I know you're not going to rip me off. Your call, though, I understand if you're not comfortable. You live in LA, I assume?

Orange County... Before I jump into anything else, a lot of these new 45s are dirty. I've been doing some brief research on cleaning, any safe methods you would recommend first....?

Oh hey, the library was having one of their annual book/CD/VHS/etc sales today, I got all these CD's for $2.25.

Prince Paul - Psychoanalysis (What Is It?)
    Jandek - Interstellar Discussion
    Ultramagnetic MC's - Critical Beatdown
    Brian Wilson - Smile
Spike Jones - Spiked! The Music of Spike Jones
Parliament - The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein

I haven't heard any of them yet.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

I'm sure I'll catch hell for this, but warm water and two microfiber rags (one for wiping, one for drying) will work wonders. Perfect for removing fingerprints and dust. Actual dirt is tricky because it's gritty and will turn to mud. Obviously you don't want to wipe that across your records. For records that are REALLY dirty, I carefully rinse with water (don't soak the label) and lightly wash with microfiber and Dove dish soap (if it's soft enough to clean oil off living creatures, it's soft enough for my records.), followed by careful rinse, wipe with dry microfiber, and finally air dry. Again, this method has worked for me with no adverse results, but others in here will scoff at that and say I'm full of shit.

You can also buy record cleaning kits at nearly any record store. I've seen chemically-treated microfiber cleaning rags sold in individual packets as well. Chemicals make me nervous about residue and excess friction on the needle, hence my preference for easy-rinsing Dove liquid soap.

Never? Oh man, you're in for a treat. Ultramagnetic MCs are one of my favorite rap groups ever.

Critical Beatdown. Absolute masterpiece, easily my favorite of the many fantastic late-80s rap albums. Four Horsemen is also quite good, dark and jazzy. Funk Your Head Up is disappointing and should be explored a bit later, stick with the great stuff at first. The Basement Tapes is also worth checking out. Uneven and demo-y, it contains their earliest recordings and is really only for folks who really, really like them.

believe it or not this was the idea that stuck in my head. I read about someone else using this method, but it seemed kinda out there. Wanted to see what ur initial recommendation was before I went forward w/ it.... Guess it's soap and water then, I'll report back w/ the results.

you want to be careful with the soap... it does leave residue if you leave too much (less of a concern for your records, more a concern for your needle if you have a nice one).

best way to do this is just get a spray bottle, fill it 3/4 with water, 1/4 with isopropyl alcohol, and then add a drop or two of dish soap. then just use a microfiber cloth.

Ahh, yes. I forgot to specify that any and all cleaning compounds should be used sparingly. You're only cleaning a small piece of vinyl, be very conservative with any solutions you mix and apply to the surface of your records. As Jared mentioned, leftover residue will destroy your needle.

Hmmm, what type of stuff are you looking for? Any specific wattage or components or brands you're interested in? And if you need a table, amp, and speakers, that $400 will not get you very far.

Honestly anything that sounds good.. i'm a "beginner" at this so yeahh hah. I've been looking at this one http://www.project-audio.com/main.php?prod=debut
do you think that would be a good buy? and yeah i was planning on just buying a table for now for -$400 price range. but then again, would i be better off with a plain old record player? like a Crosley or something.. what kind of set-up do you have?

This is the table I have for listening (after using Technics for a long time):

    http://www.amazon.com/Music-Hall-Mmf...2204744&sr=8-2

I love it, super classy-looking and great sound with the stock cartridge.

I run it through my DJ mixer into JBL LSR2325s. Soon, once I save up, I'll buy a nice subwoofer to go with it.

The Debut III is nice table, well worth the money. That's actually the table I was saving for before my old man gave me his old rig. Do not buy a Crosley under any circumstances. Those things are cheap, poorly-made, and will destroy your records.
