My Spanish teacher I was working with since November, before we started I checked his references with other clients and they all checked out. I paid in advance for my lessons each month, but it became expensive and he also became unreliable, skipping lessons and having to book makeup times with me. I told him I was thinking of cancelling for a refund, which his policies allowed, and he said 10 days ago he'd email me the money ASAP, then changed his mind and said he'd pay me end of the month (today). Said I would get paid today which I didn't. Won't say how he'll pay or get me the money. Update.. We are now battling it out on text, which is super annoying.

I said I would take action against him if I didn't get the money immediately. (Mind you I didn't say what my action would be). That was enough to freak him out. He emailed me the $ within half an hour.

We have before, so it kept autocorrecting to Spanish when I was trying to argue in English. Again, annoying.

    1. Do I still need to let ladies on and off elevators first?
    2. Somebody recently brought the ingredients to make a specialty martini to a party of ours. I’m not sure who, because they just placed them in a bag on the counter next to all of the booze we were serving and other people brought as well. Their bottles were never opened and I noticed they were missing at the end of the party. They must have taken them back home. What’s the ruling here?

If you bring refreshments to the party they should remain there even if unused - unless the host/hostess offers it back to you to take home.

I believe this is incorrect. Elevators and Revolving doors are treated different from regular doorways (where the male approaches the door and then holds it ope for women). A man should always enter and exit an elevator and revolving doors first on the theory that he will resolve any danger on the "other side" before the female.

I'll concede on elevators (although I was always taught that a gentleman steps forward to prevent the door from closing and then allows all females leaving the elevator to precede him, which is not quite the same as "exiting" first)

For revolving doors though...no way: It may seem counterintuitive, but by taking the lead at a revolving door, a gentleman is being chivalrous, saving you the effort of pushing the door and making sure that whatever is on the other side is "safe"

Sorry, Elevator etiquette says ladies first on or off, unless a male passenger is blocking the path to get off.

You know what actual etiquette is? Treating human people like human people and not being beholden to these incredibly stupid gendered ideas of what constitutes etiquette that perpetuate the many flaws of structuralized patriarchy. If you're the closest one to a door or a revolving door, open it or go through it for the person nearest to you, because it's a nice thing to do. Let the person nearest to the elevator door get on or off first.

I am willing to bet that like, never, not once, has there been any instance of a man resolving DANGER on the opposite side of a revolving door and protecting the woman behind him. That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

I don't think I ever considered gender-specific door etiquette. I'm impatient and walk fast, so I'm usually the first to reach a door. Regardless of who is behind me (M or F), I'll hold it for them before following through.

For elevators, I grew up hearing that I should always let ladies on and off first. Now that people seem more distracted than ever, patient chivalry is resulting in a lot of doors closing on people as they walk through.

Going forward I will let anyone who seems to be attentively eager to board as soon as the last person exists, on before me. If ladies are standing too far from the elevator, or are mid-conversation, or are distracting themselves with their phone, I’m heading in first and holding the door open button if I need to.

You should always allow women to walk in front of you in any situation, so you can look at their butts.

I have to admit, the following scenario infuriates me:

    - I show up to an empty lobby and call for the elevator

    - Sit what seems like an eternity waiting for it. In the meantime, 25 people show up behind me.

    - Elevator comes. I get in first (being in the front), and everyone packs in like sardines. I am jammed in the corner.

    - Elevator finally reaches destination. I have to sit and wait while everyone files out ahead of me.

So the first guy in a crowded elevator (usually the one waiting the longest) gets screwed.

Ought to be a law against that.

ThatGirl reminds me of a Craigslist semi-scammer I dealt with once.

Someone sold me some furniture, I foolishly paid in full, but a few of the pieces I bought weren't there when I went to pick it up. I was told they would deliver them to me, but it never happened. The person stalled me for a month with various contradictory stories and avoiding my phone calls.

Finally they conceded that they lost those pieces, but that I wasn't going to get any refund because I got "such a good deal" on the other stuff. They told me I could go ahead and sue them if I wasn't happy with this.

Let's just say I made life incredibly difficult for this person, and they backed down, returning my money equivalent to the value of the pieces that they lost.

At one point I told them, "You know how the last two weeks have been? That's going to be your life for the next 10 years if you don't refund the money for the stuff you didn't deliver."

There is a very simple and also etiquette-appropriate solution to this: when the elevator comes simply be polite and step aside and and gesture to let the other people waiting know that you are letting them get on first, therefore ensuring you are the last to board (and first to leave). Problem solved.
