    Default Japanese bands are crazy.

As a general rule, Japanese rock bands are pretty great. If they are psychedelic in any way, they tend to be completely fucking insane and heavy.

I by no means pretend to be an authority on this. In fact, I'm still listening through albums by a lot of these bands. But the scenes (at least the psych scene) seem to be pretty insular. A lot of these projects share members, and if you like one, you will probably like the other. For example:

    Fushitsusha

These guys are fucking nuts. Keiji Haino is a guitar god and is the main dude. He has played with all sorts of other bands, including Boris. Fushitsusha make really out-there improvised psychedelic noise rock. I mean, watch these guys jam the fuck out:

This is a little less freeform, but equally awesome:

These guys, Les Rallizes Denudes, do the Spacemen 3/krautrock thing really well, only they were doing it in the 1960s and being totally fucking batshit back then. This video is from the 80's.

Some of these groups do the Blue Cheer/Sabbath thing really well. I'm sure most of you are familiar with Boris. But there are also great bands like these, most of which are interconnected in ways I don't want to explain right now. they were doing the lo-fi thing before it was fucking cool to make shitty-sounding records. The other difference is they fucking rip on their instruments:

    High Rise

    Mainliner

    Subvert Blaze

Sometimes the bands get kinda pastoral and mystical and shit. For example:

    White Heaven

White Heaven's Michio Kurihara has also recorded with this band, Ghost, who are totally fucking amazing:

Plus Boris and a whole bunch of others.

Then there are bands like Acid Mothers Temple, who are kind of a combination of all of those things:

Marble Sheep are fucking amazing as well:

Basically, these bands all destroy. I'll post more later.

    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

I discovered Yura Yura Teikoku a few years ago and have been trying to get some of their stuff every since. Their live album "NA.MA.SHI.BI.RE.NA.MA.ME.MA.I" is still available at mesh key it looks like http://www.mesh-key.com/mky015.html. I love how at the end of track 4 (after a 10 minute epic buildup) the crowd is like silent for a few seconds in shock and then starts politely clapping.

Tatsuya Yoshida projects are all typically nuts. He's most famous for being behind Ruins, which most likely was the inspiration for other similar nutty drummer/bass duos:

Slightly off the psych/rock topic, but Yoshida also recorded some albums with the great Japanese jazz pianist Satoko Fujii. The combinations of jazz piano and mathy drumming is stunning, at times:

    From the buried Nisennenmondai thread:

Their music is very repetitious, but it builds up and keeps progressing until it is totally rocking out. This statement leaves out the fact that they have one of the best female drummers I have ever seen. It is almost like she is from another planet, she is just incredible. I was more impressed by them then Battles who they opened for. They are a definite can't miss and worthy of checking out, but there is a huge difference watching their youtube videos and actually seeing them live. The girls seem very shy and coy, but are absolutely awesome when performing. The drummer is the main stage presence and is totally lethal.

With that said, here are a couple videos from the show. I didn't get any whole songs since they are really long.

Drum solo at the end of this song is insane.

    Bump.

Tell me about Michio Kurihara. Apparently he's collab'd with Boris on two of his three albums, and a last.fm description dubs him "the premier guitarist of the Japanese underground psychedelic movement."

I'm familiar with him only for his Boris collab albums, most notably Rainbow, and he's on Smile as well. I believe he's toured with them numerous times too.

Looks like He's been in bands called Ghost (which has a pretty extensive discography) and The Stars. Both are worth looking into, i'd bet.

Ghost is really great. They get more pastoral than some of the other psych stuff in here, but they have their moments of craziness. There is a Ghost video in the first post of this thread.

I still need to listen to The Stars, but I'm sure they rule too.
