I did this - sort of - before Coachella one year. I went to the spot in JTNP where they tried to burn his casket, and which is now sort of an unofficial Gram shrine. Then I went to the Joshua Tree Inn and sat in the parking lot but couldnt' figure out how to go in to the lobby and ask to see Gram's room without feeling like a total freak. Plus I was hungry. so I left.

Allow me to add the Imperial Sand Dunes near El Centro. You can stop by Salton Sea along the way if you'd like. It's a good 100+ minute drive from Indio, but get an early enough start and it's worth the trip.

Especially when there's some night races going on...

Aw. As far as I understand, they still rent out the room. So you probably wouldn't have been able to see it anyway because a guest may very well have been occupying it.
