Adam, I'll be downtown on Sunday night. I might just cower in the hotel and watch the Oscars.

It would be great to see you, but Sunday nights are no good for me. I have to get up at 5 in the morning for work on Monday.

Alas, there are no stand out musical happenings. Chilling in your hotel room may not be a bad option. If you catch a wild hare, there is plenty to do besides music.(obviously)

    Safe travels!

They have what is suppossed to be an awesome summer concert series in Grant Park for free. Pitchfork is fairly cheap and usually an amazing time.

I will be attending the Maceo Plex/Eats Everything show on Friday at Spybar. Magda/Troy Pierce/Marc Houle will be performing at the same location on Saturday. Both shows are FREE with RSVP and arrival/check-in before midnight. It's best to show up well before midnight to ensure free entry. Last time we were too late and had to pay $15 each to get in to The Mid even though we had already RSVP'd.

Cool to see a Chicago type thread. Surprised to see The Burlington listed on here so many. Place is cool, but pretty small. I thought it was all local DJs?

Anyone from Chicago have an extra Coachella ticket? I can meetup anywhere in the area with cash anytime!

I lived like 3 blocks from the Burlington and only went in there once. Mostly a product of paradoxically working non stop and being miserably broke the entire time I was there. But I also don't remember there being shows/DJs announced there.

You'd like Maceo Plex more than Magda.

If you're looking for stuff to do on a daily basis, Time Out Chicago's website is a really good resource, and they have a section that lists the free stuff going on every day.

St. Paddy's Day weekend in Chicago was a wild one. We sandwiched a trip to see the river turned green with two great shows at Spybar.

Our first night started off well when we scored a free parking space downtown. Entry was also free because we arrived before midnight and had RSVPd. Eats Everything began rocking shortly thereafter. His style is what I have coined ambling house. It doesn't quite plod along, but sort of ambles and lurches forward. Overall, great for an appetizer. I wouldn't want it as a main course though.

Maceo Plex took over around 1:30. My expectations were slightly lower because of his unimpressive Essential Mix. He quickly dispelled any assumptions I'd made. The sound that I fell in love with was delivered in full. Buttery deep funky house. It's so smooth and rich that it leaves a vibe in the air that was still present the next night. The set lasted two hours plus a brief encore.

Somehow we regrouped later that morning for a looooong walk. The revelers were out in force. A river of green people walked along a green river. Beers were randomly thrown to passers by. Our adventure took us to the tip of the Navy Pier and to a great Thai restaurant. Riding the train to and from town saved us from having to fight the holiday crowd with the car.

After a power nap, we drove to the show once more. Parking was paid this time, but admission to the club was free again. Troy Pierce played from around 11:30 to 1:30. I really liked what he was doing. His sound straddled tech, house and progressive in a seamless way. Definitely a thinking man's DJ. Good energy level, but he never really blew the lid off. And neither did Marc Houle who sounded fairly similiair for an hour. Magda finally brought the bombs to the dance floor. She exceeded my expectations bigtime. I thought she might be boring, but was happily wrong. The bass was hard hitting and very funky. Her set didn't end until 4:30. I can't wait to see her again.

I have been to Spybar three times now and would definitely recommend it. The scene is not as cool as Smart Bar, but definitely fun. They promote free shows often and have a booming soundsystem. There hasn't been a line to get in even though the club across the street has consistently had one down the block. The staff have been decent. Drawbacks include pricey drinks and lack of parking. It can also get pretty crowded with less than desirable people. The pros outweigh the cons when there is a quality act.

Debating whether to hit James Murphy at the Mid on the 23rd. It's the eve of my birthday, and I fucking love James Murphy and his taste, but it's the Mid, which I abhor, and could probably end up at a different place with friends or something that wouldn't be willing to pay for James Murphy.

I quickly decided against going to the James Murphy show. The crowd will be horrendous and they're asking too much money.

Do two nights in a row at Smart Bar. Fred Falke is playing on Friday and I know you will be there Saturday night.

Regrettably, I won't be able to make it to Chicago this weekend. The three hour drive can sometimes prove an obstacle.

I'm thinking I might take in some local house flavor on Friday night. You're probably right about the Mid. But man. James Murphy.

Hey, Mission of Burma is coming to town in 2 weeks. Think I'll go to that.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

I'm majorly disappointed that Jeff Mills vs. Derrick May show is at the Mid. If only their bookings were as shitty as their club. Oh well, it'll help me resist temptation to blow all my money on shows before I start working. I'm definitely gonna be at Ben Klock at Smart Bar on Saturday though.

Before and after attending weekend one, I managed to take in a few shows around the midwest.

Kimya Dawson played at Rozz Tox, a coffee shop and gallery located in Rock Island, IL. It's a very hip space for the Quad Cities and has a loose association with Daytrotter Studios. The show was sold out and many of us crammed in cross legged to sit at the feet of an awkwardly charming troubadour. Kimya had her daughter in tow and it was a week night, so the show ended early.

Later that week, we paid a visit to Iowa City. The main goal was to see Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 perform at the Englert Theater. The venue was lovely and seats only a few hundred. We quickly jumped out of said seats as soon as the band took the stage. The pure uncut afrobeat came at us for almost two hours. The dance marathon was just beginning. A flyer had alerted us to a rave later that night. Yes, an actual rave. The venue was a church called the Old Brick. The promoters advertised techno music and by god did they deliver. The headliners were Complicit who were from Minneapolis. It was so refreshing to see teenagers getting down to real tech sounds instead of dubstep or top 40 club shlock. And in Iowa no less. There is a future for electronic dance music in America, although it will be a convoluted one.

Once I returned from the desert, it was necessary to catch Modeselektor playing a Saturday night gig at Metro in Chicago. I missed their set on the polo fields in 08 and this year. It was worth the wait. Metro is a nostalgic place for me and I had not been there since the 90s. We were able to stand close enough to the stage to be sprayed with champagne by Sebastian. It was a special night. Especially considering they would be back in the Mojave with Thom Yorke less than 24 hours later. Our paid admission also gave us admittance to Smart Bar where Gadi Mizrahi, Baby Prince, Tanner Ross and Deniz Kurtel were laying down mellow house. We were able to make it to about 2:45 before our energy waned and we were forced to return to the farmlands.
