Default higgy's guide to midwestern living

Having recently moved back to my hometown in Illinois, I thought it would be nice to create a tiny corner of the board to celebrate the musical happenings of middle America.

Please help me to highlight significant shows anywhere in IL, IA, IN, OH, MO, MN, WI, MI or anywhere else around these areas. I realize an entire message board could and has been created just covering the city of Chicago. So, let's stick to the shows that might otherwise fall through the cracks and aren't being hyped in other threads.

Next weekend in Columbia there's the annual Roots 'N Blues 'N BBQ Fest. The lineup includes:

    Ana Popovic
Robert Randolph and the Family Band
    Mavis Staples
    Dr. Ralph Stanley
    Robert Cray
    Los Lobos
    Taj Mahal
    Fitz and the Tantrums

I'm thinking of buying a pass to see Mavis, Dr. Ralph, Los Lobos and Fitz.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

    Trentemoller @ Metro
    Derrick Carter 7 hour set
    Steffi
    Dave Clarke

    Can I move back yet?

Also, The Mid is probably my least favorite venue in Chicago. Not the worst space in the world, but the staff there ruin the vibe completely.

Maybe not similar, but some good sites for Chicago are Broke Hipster (lets you know where the cheap/free food/drinks are around town on a daily basis), Time Out Chicago, Free Things To Do In Chicago, The Reader website. That should keep you abreast of many goings on. I don't know much about underground listings, for whatever reason.

Two of my favorite Tucson bands of all time will be doing a few shows in mid-America soon.

Bob Log III is well known in the underground and is part of the Fat Possum Records roster of artists. His sound can best be described as noisy, swamp blues. Fans of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Dub Narcotic Soundsystem and Bongwater will love Bob. Did I mention he is a one-man band who also happens to wear a jet fighter helmet for the entire show? Also notorious for Boob Scotch. Google it.

Mr. Free and the Satellite Freakout have risen from the streets and house parties of the Old Pueblo to an international tour and opening slots for acts like the Monotonix. Their sound is part Butthole Surfers aggression and part Zappa-esque goofy prog. Mr. Free has amazing charisma and truly earns his bold title.

Getting ready to make the drive for two shows tonight. We are attempting to attend both the Cut Chemist + Quantic show at The Mid and also the Cassy + Deniz Kurtel show at Spybar. Hopefully we will have some energy left to go see Lindstrom at Smartbar tomorrow night.

Great thread! Any websites or twitter accounts to follow that have all the Chicago concert announcements in one place? Thanks! New resident here....

Kind of a bummer in some respects, but an awesome article about Chicago's dance scene with resources:

^That RA article is interesting. It inspires me to crack the cliques and find these underground parties.

I'm fairly certain I will be going to Chicago on Thanksgiving weekend. Still trying to decide between Boys Noize and Nicholas Jarr, but will definitely be seeing Gaiser. I kind of like the idea of two nights in a row at Smart Bar, but am also feeling compelled to see Boys Noize again.

Anybody know about affordable lodging on the north side. We stayed at a Motel 6 in Elk Grove Village last time. It was priced right, but a bit of a drive.

I don't know of any single exhaustive source, that's why I started this thread. There is already a number of solid links here.

We've been waiting. Also, were you wearing a Barkley jersey at SBTRKT? I looked for a man straight of spine and sleeveless of shirt, perhaps it was you.

Just saw this thread for the 1st time. I'll make some Minneapolis-related announcements occassionally. I guess the big news today, which a lot of you guy's already know, is tied into Coachella. We know Naked and Famous won't be at Coachella because they're playing Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago during weekend 1. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious nws for the 90th time
