    Encores.

What do people think of them? Opinions on encores, whether or not they are planned/unplanned?

Should bands play straight through sets without them? GY!BE style? I'm sure it depends on the act in question. And then you have some acts like that have multiple encores and whatnot. Thoughts?

I ask because I recently heard a friend of mine say that he thought planned encores were the really lame. So I thought I'd see what others think.

I agree that they should just keep playing. It's not like they have enough time to rest after they leave the stage. Might as well just stay. Although, I am so used to encores.
It might seem weird without them.

The encore thing is kind of stupid. In theory the whole point of an encore is because A. the band still wanted to keep going after a planned setlist, B. They are rewarding an awesome crowd. So because of all the constant encores by so many bands for apparently no reason, the encore has lost its point. I guess it could also be used to play older songs for long time hardcore fans, but it still seems kinda lame when planned ahead of time.

I will say that Nin did alot of planned encores, and it kinda worked cause you would be hanging out waiting for them to get back on the fucking stange while the lights were stobing and a guitar was looping feedback into an amp..

    Drama.

The only excuse for a planned encore is if members of the band have small bladders and need a pee break.

A lot of bands use encores to go pee, grab some lucozade, and then come back to go for broke on the last stretch.

Although I do think the whole charade is kinda lame, I can live with it 'cause the atmosphere for even a planned encore tends to be that little bit better than the regular end of the show would have been otherwise.

EITS doesnt do encores for example. They had to explain it at their hollywood forever show for the zillionth time.

And it depends, I mean if you know they got the really good stuff coming for the encore, then its cool. And yeah, if a band plays 20 songs before even bothering with a 2 songs encore to end the night, no need to gripe.

Encores have been ruined just like standing ovations. Neither are special anymore do to them being mandatory these days.

Spelling bees are not mandatory but that doesn't mean they are any less special these days, due to rarity.

It's like a 2 minute timeout before going into the songs I would normally want them to have the energy for. I'm totally OK with planned or unplanned.

I think the charade of it is dumb, but even rock stars have to take a leak and rehydrate/do drugs. I don't know, I tend to respect it more when an artist says "we will be right back" and then goes off for a break rather than acting like it is deserved.

I like it. It's just a pause before an epic conclusion, which makes it better. Its also fun trying to figure out what songs they'll play next. Without it, the ending is only noticed by those who check their watches.

They are planned, furthermore, I'll be back to finish my thought later...
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

I dont like planned encores either. I think explosions in the sky is the only show I've gone to that didn't have an encore. But there have been shows, the best one i can think of is beach house at the music box the last time they came around, where i really think that the crowd deserved an encore. Planned encores now seems to greatly discourage legitimate honest encores. And encores should be the place where bands just play random songs that they feel like playing that they normally don't. Not something like one of their biggest songs that everyone expected them to play anyway.

It's annoying when bands say things like "thats it for us tonight, thanks alot guys!" when they know damn well the stage hands are on their way out to adjust instruments and they will be back on stage in 5 minutes for an encore.
