Oslo bombing and Utoya massacre, Norway.

Shortly after a car bomb went off near the Prime Minister's office in Oslo, a (caucasian) dude disguised as a police officer showed up at the Labour party's political youth retreat on Utoya island and opened fire. With nowhere to go but the water, some folks were apparently shot trying to swim away. The killer is apparently in police custody.

Although some Islamic groups have claimed responsibility, it's believed to be an act of domestic rather than international terrorism. Norway has some small but hardcore right wing outfits, and the attack seems to be aimed squarely at the centre left/ social democrat ruling party.

^^^ Considering what happened in Denmark with Theo van Gogh, I don't think it's a crazy thought. While I can't speak for Norway, I know that throughout Europe there is significant anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment... often times more so than in the US. And there's always the possibility that it was a couple of crazy Jared Loughter types, and Al Qaida took responsibility to make themselves look like King Shits.

Witnesses who have managed to escape from the island, says to NRK reporters on the spot that the perpetrator had a Norwegian look. Han skal være mellom 185 til 190 cm høy og ha blondt hår. He should be between 185 to 190 cm tall and have blond hair.

It's been mentioned a few times on BBC's rolling news, but it doesn't seem to be widely reported online yet. Police described him as "Nordic" - ie blonde hair/ blue eyes - from the off, but that seems to have morphed into "Norwegian" in the relay.

- but more seriously, "Norwegian" is a question of citizenship, "Nordic" is about ethnicity. The 7/7 bombers were British, for instance, so the distinction is significant.

Norwegian police have confirmed that the attack is unrelated to Islamic terrorism. Sky News, who were desperately spinning otherwise all evening, seem fucking despondant at the revelation. Most of the tabloid front pages for tomorrow have already gone to print, with some going to so far to blame Al Qaeda in the headlines.

I have to say I feel pretty fucking good about the ongoing downfall of News International bearing all that in mind.
