Eminem for 2012?

He came up on my iPod on shuffle and I got all nostalgic because my sister used to play his music a lot when I was younger.

If Coachella's sticking to the hip-hop headliner, does anyone think Eminem would be a good fit?

He's doing Lollapalooza and he just did Bonnaroo, maybe Coachella.

I said this in the bonnaroo thread, but the beginning of his set made me really uncomfortable. SOO angry. especially the old songs, which are my favorite. it doesn't seem to fit the feel good aspect of bonnaroo or coachella.

I just saw him at Bonnaroo. I went in expecting nothing but left highly impressed. It was actually a pretty incredible show. He had amazing control over the crowd, everyone was dancing and singing along and the music was crisp and loud. I think he's a solid pick...and I wouldn't have said that 3 weeks ago. Yeah he's a little angry, but whatever - in the end it was fun.

Neither did Odd Future; Some would put Rage into the "angry" category. There are other acts I can delve into that have played Coachella that fit that mold as well.

Eminem would only go over well at Coachella with a live band and a set list that is dominated by Slim Shady LP, MMLP and Devil's Night material. There are a couple of newer tracks that would go off well live, but his set list at Bonnaroo is the only real gripe I have.

I can't judge how good his set was simply based off of a webcast, but from what I saw, he knows how to put on a good show again. He just needs to work in some more of the older material he did in with some of the newer stuff.

That being said, I don't see him headlining Coachella in 2012.

Explain that last comment.... I am white and knew TONS of white kids growing up that listened to Dre, Snoop, NWA and massive amounts of hip hop long before Eminem was rapping on a mainstream level.

The real original tools for a white audience in hip hop are one of the most clamored for acts on this board - The Beastie Boys.

yeah.... but the Beastie Boys started as a punk band and living in New York i can completely understand the transition into hiphop. They basically knew everyone.

as far as Eminem goes, his rise started as an attempt to attract a newer generation of backpackers and hiphop heads. Who else in NWA was making news aside from Dre and the Chronic 2001, and Snoop here and there. I just think they took advantage of the situation, realized they had a little diamond in the rough. Brought them back into the mainstream. But it could just be my clouded judgment on the whole situation. The guy has always rubbed me the wrong way..... i guess i appreciate a different form of hiphop.

The Beastie Boys were kind of a joke hip hop act at first and a lot of people in the world of hip hop didn't like that. The eventually got their own following and respect, but their whole hip hop persona was them virtually mocking the culture in the beginning. Hip hop fans at that time did not take them seriously until the Raising Hell tour with Run DMC.

I have listened to every form of hip hop around. I became familiar with Eminem's material long before Dre was involved. He used to spit verses on Sway and Tech well before Dre signed him. He was in the unsigned hype section of the source in 1997. He has worked with The High and Mighty, Scam, The Outsidaz, Jeru the Damaja and tons of other undeground artsts.

But, yes, Eminem did bring Dre back into the mainstream. They kind of helped each other out. People can say what they want about Eminem, but there aren't too many emcees, underground or mainstream, that are at the level lyrically that Eminem is.

That being said, I don't think he would necessarily go over the greatest at Coachella without some tweaking to his performance. No one, not even the most diehard Eminem fans, want to see him perform "White Trash Party" or "Love The Way You Lie" over tracks like "I Just Don't Give a Fuck" or "Purple Pills".
