It's raining Portishead tix!
Is it better to stay in S.F. or Berkeley? I have my flight and car booked but still looking for lodging.
I'm considering this hotel. Super 8 - El Cerrito/Berkeley Solid reviews, free parking and internet and about 5 miles from the venue. I'm guessing it's going to be easier to stay in Berkeley. Maybe I just answered my own question.
You might be able to find something else on the San Pablo stretch in el cerrito/albany/north berkeley closer to Solano/University that might be a bit more convenient (as far as good food/proximity to the venue is concerned).
I'd say stay in Berkeley though. That way you can chill out after the shows and not worry about BART (or parking).
Thanks Jared, i'll broaden my search a bit and see what I come up with. I was considering the Berkeley Hostel ($30/night) but heard it's a nightmare to park in that area as it's surrounded by restricted parking. It was appealing because it looked like walking distance to the venue.
That location would be beyond perfect. Walking distance to venue, food, bart... You could get away without a car if you stayed there...
Yea, Mark, you really don't need a car. Public transit is pretty good (and the Portishead show will not be on THAT late). I don't think you'll find anything else even close to that price.
The only reason I can think of for staying in SF would be to go out after / hang out with people after Portishead, but I think a lot of us are going to be jetting over to Public Works (for Art Department & Damian Lazarus -- probably not your thing).
Hmm so cancel the car, stay at the hostel and use BART to get to and from Berkeley? Let me get this priceline name your own price rental car canceled then. Luckily I have a trick for that too. This will be much affordable. I'm having lunch with some friends in Berkeley the next day so this should all work out. Thanks for the tips.

Mark, BART runs until around 12:30AM, so you'd have no problem getting to/from the airport. There are also lots of bus routes (and all-night buses - though those are fairly limited in their routes). Berkeley IS a college town, so there are tons of options for getting around without a car.
I'm all set now. Can't wait for this show and to see you fine people.
When are you getting into town, Mark?

I will be arriving at 10:00AM on Friday.
I did some googling and found a blog from a former employee some months ago and this is the 2nd time i've done it successfully. Basically you tell them that when you booked you booked it as a one way rental and not round trip. They might repeat their script like the guy I just talked to did and say "i'm sorry sir, but with name your own price, you can't cancel". I then repeated that I did not make the round trip reservation, I booked a one way reservation from SFO to LAX but when I got the e-mail it stated I made a RT reservation so that's why i'm calling to straighten out the matter. Don't just call and ask for a refund. The customer care rep will then research your options and tell you he can cancel it for you with a full refund and you can go back to priceline.com to try and book your one way reservation.
Here is the link with other handy tips.

ETA, I'll be adding this to the travel thread.

So... it seems like there are dozens of us going. Are you guys planning on going early to try for good floor/pit spots? Or hanging in the seated section?
Will there be room to stretch out on the lawn? I just realized that I'll probably need to go to this in a wheelchair otherwise.

If you get there early, with a blanket and hold down your space, yes, there's room on the lawn. It tends to fill in closer closer to the front though.
I'm not really into being in the pit section for this, but was going to try to get there early enough to get a good seat. We'll see.![]()
I've never been to the Greek but my bf was telling me about some like pillars or something on the floor. I don't know what we're doing but I would like to be with y'all

Heidi, I wasn't planning on going into the first pit area either, rather the second ring with the wide steps in front of the thrones.
