i have a pair of those, but i rarely wear them at coachella. only when i'm close to the speakers. yea, i know they're supposed to "maintain the integrity of the sound", but there is something about hearing that clean crisp, unfiltered sound from the coachella stage...just isnt the same with those in. i've tried, but then i take them off for a second and realize how much better it sounds without them.

but yea, if you're close to the stacks, then its worth it. also in small clubs with loud, shitty sound systems. one time i forgot them for monotonix at the casbah, and my ears will never forgive me. they rang for like 24 hours straight. so stupid.
Let's go on a livin' spree!

I've found that with a good set of earplugs, the music sounds better than without.

Unfortunately I discovered this AFTER I saw outkast. That was one LOUD set.

Got the recommended Etymotic Research earplugs in the mail yesterday, looking forward to trying em out at EDC when I'm close up front to the speakers. Probably won't wear em if I'm farther back from the stage/speakers.

depends on where I am in reference to the stage. If I'm close or by the speaker HELL YES I use earplugs.

My brother played in a band and is now 40 and his hearing is failing him.

a note to everyone not using earplugs - that ringing sound in your ear after any concert is damage to your hearing that you can NOT get back. Research has proven that that ringing noise you hear is permanent damage.

i think it does improve the overall experience/sound. i have the custom fitted $150 pair with the decibel filters that don't affect the sound other than dropping it by 25db and i tell everyone about 'em.

I was very unhappy when I lost one of mine in the GB pit this year. (Luckily I had a spare).

For the money, they worked really well for me at EDC. I was up front near the stage, the music sounded good and I had no problems hearing my friends when they talked to me.

My ears have been having a weird vibration when i would go to shows, so I started wearing ear plugs. I recently went to go get my ears checked out just in case and it tuns out there's a dip in my hearing in one of my ears. Doctor said its not really serious but for my age, I'm 21, its still early to see something like that. So from now on i think im going to wear ear plugs all the time. I can only picture a life of being in your head and nothing else 24/7. That would suck.

I usually wear them if I'm anywhere near the stage. Coachella is fuckin loud anyway. Wearing earplugs cuts out the super treble and high feedback from the amps.

Protip: If you love music, why wouldn't you do everything to make sure you can enjoy it forever?

I wear earplugs because I have been going to festivals for 7 years, and they seem to be less loud as time goes on. I prefer being able to hear ok on a daily basis, than to murder my ear drums further for temporary enjoyment. I take them out for a couple sets during the weekend though

I'm in my mid-20's and I've noticed that I do this a lot, now I never go to a festival/show without earplugs. Etymotic makes some great earplugs at an affordable price. I've been using them for a year now and have no complaints.

First time I brought earplugs (The Ety plugs linked in this thread, coincidentally) to a show was Lolla in 2008, and when we ended up by the left speakers for RATM, I made my daughter put some in (I did as well). You never know when you'll need earplugs till you need them, and when that happens, you'll be glad you have them.

Note that I didn't take them to the Musink Tattoo Festival a couple years ago, when The Cult was headlining one night, and it was so loud in that enclosed space I actually had to leave and come back - my ears rang for several days. The loudness made the show uncomfortable, even though I love the band.

Took plugs to Soundgarden a few nights ago after hearing how it was the loudest show many had ever attended, and didn't wear them. Maybe I'm just more deaf than I used to be, but it wasn't abnormally loud.

I swear by wearing earplugs and concerts. But I gotta say, earplugs are almost a waste of time if in your daily life you're putting headphones on or earbuds in your ears and cranking the volume of your iPod to 1000 for hours on end. You're hearing is already doomed.

The only set I went to that I even felt like I could have benefitted from ear plugs was Sleigh Bells, but I don't think Sleigh Bells is meant to be heard any way but LOUD AS FUCK. Also, I can't hear for shit anyway so my opinion might be fucked.

I've used the aforementioned Etymotic set for several shows now (ordered them about a month ago), and was very glad I started using them. After seeing the Black Lips at The Casbah in San Diego, and having my ears ring for a couple of days after, I decided that was enough.

I plan on wearing them to Rage Against the Machine on Saturday. I kind of have mixed feelings about that since it will be my first RAtM concert despite listening to them for over a decade, and I would really like to rock out to them without any dampening. However, I think I will be glad I did the next day. Will I look like a goon? Maybe. But fuck it, I rather be able to hear when I'm 40.
