    Cool dancing, dancing, DANCING!

so i can't be the only one who has found it hard to find quality clubs/nights where i can get my groove on. this thread will be a listing of all things DANCE. i will update the first post with a link to specific club/event posts that get posted in here.

    • i want to see clubs/weeklies/monthlies where there is quality music to get down to.
essentially post anything that happens on a somewhat regular basis; not one-off events.

    • if you are going to post, please post the name of the club, or the weekly with a link to info if you can and indicate whether it is the name of a club or event.
i know weeklies tend to change venues over time.

    • please indicate the city

    • it would also be helpful to include the type of music or dj's/bands that that regular play.
even more helpful would be which crew throws the event or which band/dj regularly plays there.
i know we don't all have the same taste, so that would make it really helpful than just saying "i liked dancing here".

    • any other info, such as cover charges, dress codes, drink-selection, etc. would be helpful.

personally, i am interested in finding nights with old school hip-hop, GOOD 80s music, indie danceable music and drum and bass.

    ok, GO!

    the blunt club

blunt club facebook (can't check URL at work, hope this is right)

the blunt club's 9th anniversary is tonight. i haven't been in awhile, but they have a range of music. lots of hip-hop, glitch, dubstep, drum and bass, music in that range. i can't tell the regular dj's anymore. this night has been a few different places, but right now it's at the yucca tap room in tempe. i'm not sure if there's a cover charge or not, but i don't remember there being one at this particular venue.

Is there a Phoenix equivalent to Hotel Congress? There are a bunch of "clubs" here but they're usually broed out/upscale.

I dig Club Congress because it's more my crowd, the architecture, great music, good drink specials etc.

    http://www.hotelcongress.com/club/
Pretty much all genres of EDM are present. Thursday nights especially.

This dude Robden gave me his card to a dance night he promotes:

Obscura at Rips Bar 3045 N 16th St, Phoenix -- Indie / New Wave / Brit pop, every 2nd Saturday of the month
    (5-14, 6-11, 7-9, 8-13, 9-10, etc)

I haven't been to this one, but I've been to other events he has promoted in the distant past.

I could work that out possibly as well.

I got an invite to some thing at the black & tan? Never heard of it but a friend of mine is friends with another Ivy (I doubt that is how he spells it though) apparently he is known as Napp-E? They are doing a big party but it is the same night as your birthday rock band night. If anyone is interested I have a few invite cards. The listed DJ's are Kip Killagain, Deepfreq, jonboy and Napp-E. It's June 4th, doors open at 10pm, it's 21+, $10 cover and a cash bar.

    BARSMITH - Fuse Fridays

Rooftop, house music / Old school hip hop downstairs . The crowd is very diverse and laid back. Great times every time I have been. Cover has been $7-10 I believe. Definitly worth checking out once or thrice.

Black & Tan has been going on for ages - it started out years ago as a kind of rockabilly after-party/speakeasy deal in this crappy warehouse downtown. It's been through quite a few different permutations now - I had no idea they were even still doing it.

And, I'm in for the 11th. I have a baby shower to go to that night (ugh), so it will give me a good excuse to leave early.

Also, here's my contribution to the list:

Sanctum is a goth/industrial club on 7th avenue, north of Osborn. Pretty much the same DJs and crowd as all of the other (now-defunct) goth nights that have existed in Phoenix. My biggest complaint with it is that depending on who's DJing, the mixing and track selection are sometimes solid, and sometimes shit. I've only been on Fridays, but I guess they do a few different things during the week (they even had a short-lived hip hop night, which struck me as hilarious because the interior of the club is definitely gothtastic). They also have steampunk themed nights occasionally that I've been wanting to check out.

On a similar note, I went to a goth/fetish club in LA (on the Hollywood strip) last weekend called Bar Sinister that I definitely mean to go to again next time I'm out there. There's also a goth club a little further from downtown LA called Das Bunker which I've been to, which sometimes also has live concerts. I accidentally saw Combichrist there a few years ago and it was pretty good. It's definitely a grungy club, but they have a HUGE dancefloor.

Yeah, that is what Justin was telling me, supposedly they are also doing live grafiti. I didn't think hanging out in a warehouse sniffing paint fumes was quite up Nick and I's alley. I need to work him into dance night gradually.

It used to be a weekly, and then a bi-weekly, and then monthly, and the venue changed frequently. I haven't gone in years, but when it started it was one of those DL kind of things where you had to meet someone somewhere and get a ticket before they'd even tell you where it was - mainly because they didn't have permits and served alcohol all night. In all honesty, it was always kind of dirty and sketchy. The only way I even found out about it back then is that I knew the bouncer. They shut down for a while several years ago, when someone from The New Times went and did a write-up about it.

It seems like whatever they're doing now is actually legit (or, more legit anyway) - since Napp-e is involved, I think it must be a different crew entirely that's running it now.

Obscura!!!! It is fun there. I approve. It's only monthly though. It reminds me of the Hot Pink days, kind of.

Isn't there something at the San Carlos Hotel in Downtown Phoenix? I think it's called the Ghost Lounge?

And no one has mentioned Cheap Thrills yet at Brick in Phoenix? I think it's weekly.

i never even heard of it. the d&b people are some of the worst promoters ever in that they don't get the word out. on ye-old-subconscious forums, i remember asking about events and people getting all douchey having to answer. it feels like you have to be a member of a secret society to hear about this shit

is quincy's still going on? if so, can you provide some info please?

Quincy's was another late night spot, in this building a guy (named Quincy) owns on McDowell. I think it just had it's closing night a few weeks ago - not sure if that was just for the summer, or if it's gone for good.

Cheap Thrills is Jared's night. Mykill moved to SF almost five years ago but comes around about once a year for Sticky Fingers or fauxShow or a rave.

Quincy's is officially closed for the summer but will periodically pop up for parties here and there. It's always been an after-hours event that hosts downtown DJs of all genres but Consumer, Degha & Ariel have been heavily involved in the last few weeks. We've stumbled outta there at 8 am way too often this year. I'm glad he's taking a break. My liver is starting to hate me.

LOL I totally know Robden. He used to work with my sister at State Farm until he got fired for sexual harassment.

Although, he did get me jobs working for Rob Dickinson and Howard Jones.
