not so much minimal as it is tech house, but Bird Brain by Claude Von Stroke is amazing.

oh, similar to gui... hm let me think for a minute or two (definitely check out Gui's albums Chromophobia and Take My Breath Away).

I also do not trust wikipedia.
I, personally, would not classify Gui Boratto as minimal techno. He is more tech house or even what I would call progressive tech house. The genres tech house and minimal/minimal techno get tossed around a a lot and are often misused or misunderstood.

As with any form of music or art that refers to itself as minimal or minimalistic, minimal techno basically strips everything down to the absolute bare essentials while simultaneously glorifying it's rejection of what dance music is. Minimal techno is almost always anti melodic, instead relying on blips/bleeps/blops/weird noises/electronic sounds etc. This is not a new genre at all. It's been around for 20 years and only really started to get real attention in the last five years or so in the USA (not including Detroit). I think the new found interest in minimal is interesting because outside of Hawtin, I knew absolutely no one who liked minimal techno in the 90s.

Tech house on the other hand is supposed to be the combination of house and techno. It is supposed to have the "thump" of house music and more of the melodic structure of techno. Techno and minimal techno are two different genres as well.

Donald: can you elaborate a bit on the differences between techno and minimal? I feel like there is a huge overlap between the two--at least during techno sets a lot of minimal tracks tend to pop up.

    4/17: The Afghan Whigs @ Slim's
    4/17: Minilogue @ Mighty
4/21: The Men @ Rickshaw Stop
4/26: Simian Mobile Disco, Earth @ Pappy and Harriet's
5/2-5/4: Austin Psych Fest @ Carson Creek Ranch
    5/10: Joey Anderson @ TBA
    5/17: Kishi Bashi @ GAMH
    5/17: Move D b2b Optimo, Jackmaster, J.Phlip @ PW
    5/21: Baths @ The Independent
5/30: The Decemberists @ The Crystal Ballroom

    good points, donald.

Important note- not everything in here is minimal or even techno or tech house. Most of it is, however. I created this thread because I feel those three genres are more related to each other than anything else. Hell, if people posted Musique concrète I'd be happy. This is by no way a definitive guide to minimal electronic music or any other genre for that matter.

I'd suggest to people if they hear a track or sound they like to investigate it further. Make the connections, delve deeper.

Gui Boratto and Booka Shade are the last things I expected to see in here, but I see the connections.

Minimal, to me, is steeped in compression, static and other production techniques that creates a lofty, spacious, sometimes dark atmosphere that I don't find in a lot of techno that sounds, more animated, sampled and linear.

Cara: I found three examples from videos posted in this thread. There are several tracks posted I would not consider any of these three genres but to each their own. As far as the difference between techno and minimal techno they are closely related but I think the two tracks I picked signify the difference, at least in my mind.

    Minimal Techno

    Techno

    Tech House

Israeli producer Guy Gerber takes his live set on the road to North America this month, starting in Montreal on Friday, May 27.

Gerber has been championing his own brand of melodic tech house for almost a decade, with releases on Bedrock, Cocoon and Cadenza, but today he might be most well known for Supplement Facts, the label he founded four years ago in Tel Aviv. Lee Curtiss, Till von Sein and Seuil have all produced for the label, whose records are adorned with Gerber's own vivid cover art. This North American tour coincides with two new releases on the label: a remix package for last summer's Hate/Love EP, and a new collaboration between Gerber and Chaim.

Armed with a new live set, which features an 808 clone and a slew of effects pedals, Gerber's tour takes place over two weekends starting at the end of May: he'll kick things off at Stereo in Montreal alongside Berghain DJ Ben Klock, then head to Miami before playing a Sunday afterparty at City Club in Detroit during Movement, which also features M.A.N.D.Y. and Craig Richards. The following weekend will see Gerber headline a Thursday night at Blkmarket Membership in New York, followed by night in Chicago at an undisclosed location. The tour winds down the following Saturday, June 6th, at Footwork in Toronto.
May 27 Guy Gerber - Ben Klock - Hear, Stereo, Montreal
May 28 Guy Gerber, Electric Pickle, Florida
May 29 Get Physical Detroit Leftroom vs Cu.., City Club, Michigan
Jun 02 Blkmarket Membership & Cielo presents:.., Cielo, New York
Jun 03 Guy Gerber, TBA - Chicago, Illinois
Jun 04 Platform Footwork present: Guy Gerber, Footwork, Toronto

For fans of Gui Boratto/The Field/kompakt

Both of his albums are pretty incredible.

Also, for the softer more intimate side of mnml:

This guy can get down as well. His recent mix (entitled wuppdeckmischmampflow) for kompakt is incredible. Featured this wonderful track:
