Yeah I'm planning on it. The fact that I'm moving to Washington mid-september helps a lot. I have wanted to go so badly every year.

Oh trust me I know. dB, Dimensions, and Unsound basically just go on my fucking iPod to determine their line ups.

Holy crap Shifted's RA is very enjoyable! I'm bummed I missed Blawan's boiler room show but will be sure to watch/listen when it becomes available, especially after reading reviews in here. I've been meaning to find some newer mixes of his for Sonar research. He's doing some type of b2b with Mary Anne Hobbs so I'm curious to hear what they bring together.

IIRC, it was heavy on the techno at the outset. More pleasantly weird bass stuff at the back end. Perhaps his b2b w/ Mary Anne Hobbes will be less techno oriented.

And since we're talking about Shifted, here's a nice mix from another producer not originally known for techno:

I was in New York at the time, staying about five blocks away from where that show was happening.. but couldn't go due to lack of fake ID Made me very sad. I needed some raw techno in my life. Have you guys heard the recent release he did with Synkro? It's pretty great.

Fortunetely, someone started a thread about this the other day:
    http://www.coachella.com/forum/showt...about-good-EDM

There's a lot of good information in there. Especially the podcast suggestions. Subscribing to reliable podcasts, in my opinion, is the easiest way to get turned onto good new electronic music because they're automatically downloaded to your iTunes. You need only hit 'play.' I think this post was the most useful from that thread:

    John Osborn's TANSTAAFL series

Ignore the Essential Mix. Its mostly pathetic these days.

Ive never understood this genre label. Why do they call things minimal that has so much actually going on? Do they just try and differentiate from banger party housr/techno?

Haha my sentiments exactly! Glad Culture Collide picked him up cause I wouldn't have bought a ticket just for him and Joey. I would have wept at home instead.

I will admit i have not scanvanged through this entire thead. However, when i hear respected people talk about "minimal" as a genre it really throws me off. Why and where does the term minimal apply to interesting house and techno?

We had this discussion in this thread w/in the first 10 pages IIRC. When people talk about minimal techno they usually mean the m-nus type stuff of the mid-noughties, but it has other connotations of a more aged vintage.

"Minimal" house, to me, is really what people commonly refer to as micro-house.

Edit: Feel free to disregard all of the above. People far more knowledgeable than I have far more enlightening thoughts on the mattter.

No I'd agree that is a good push in the right direction. Just peruse this thread, especially in the beginning, and you'll find great examples with discussion on the topic. It's evolved quite a bit, and now its used as a more general term which can be pretty confusing to someone who doesn't follow techno closely. Purists will argue that it's often misused in today's context though, so much of this is debatable anyways. Good luck.
