    Default Beirut Announces New Album

    Awwww yeah.

New Beirut Album Coming This Summer
The last month or so has seen an increased level of activity from sonic postcard-sender Zach Condon's Beirut project; he's hitting the road for a fairly extensive tour soon and he contributed a Caetano Veloso cover to the Red Hot Organization's forthcoming benefit compilation, Red Hot + Rio 2 (stream it above). If you guessed that this means that there's a new album in the cards as well, then give yourself a gold star, because you pretty much nailed it.

Condon recently told HitFix that the as-yet-untitled record is set for release "sometime this summer" and was recorded this past winter in upstate New York. He told HitFix that the new album is "sunny," saying, "I write sad songs when it’s nice outside. I write warm and happy songs when I'm up to my neck in snow for three months."

HitFix also points out that Condon contributed new and previously recorded music to the score for the documentary Bombay Beach, directed by music video lenser Alma Har'el.

About time, it's been 3 and a half years since the last LP release.

I hope "this summer" means the album gets released before I see them live on August 2nd.

This is amazing news. I mean, it's already May, so at this point in the year usually this type of news is more often "______ will release an album in December" or something of the sort. So fuck yeah.

Exactly. Hopefully we get West Coast dates sooner than later.

I definitely like Beirut. but... everything sounds so similar. I hope the new album offers up some more variation.

Check out March of the Zapotec/Holland. The former was recorded with a Mexican mariachi band, and the latter has an electronic aspect to it.

And The Joys of Losing Weight which is a bunch of early untitled demos that are way different, pretty Magnetic Fields inspired.

Yeah, I remember reading that Aphex Twin was one of Zach's influences growing up. Can't recall where the interview came from though.

Hmmm. They were billed 6th in 2009. Maybe 3rd or 4th billed in 2012? Hard to say. I guess it depends on how well their new album is received.

I'm kinda surprised they weren't there this year. I mean, they're playing almost every other festival in 2011.

All about timing, nothing else. And you cant bill them THAT high on Coachella. If you do, and popped em on main stage, nobody watching would really know the music. Hopefully next time they play Outdoor at night, that would be fitting.

I don't think so. At least not recently. However, they do play a non-electronic version of My Night with the Prostitute from Marseille (which sounds fantastic):

Agreed. I could also see them playing the Mojave again... mainly because of the capacity increase.

Man, Beirut Outdoor at Sunset would already be my most anticipated set for next year, and the lineup isn't even announced yet.

No Chris, getting a full set in a nice theater with a drink in your hand surrounded by other Beirut fans is a little more ideal.

Really? You think so? I think Gulag Orkestar and The Flying Club Cup are completely different sounding albums. The former is heavily influenced by eastern european balkan music, while the latter is more influenced by jazz and lounge music from the south of France. Furthermore, The Flying Club Cup is a very highly produced album, whereas Gulag Orkestar was recorded mostly in Zach's bedroom, resulting in a much more organic and less produced sound. I really think the two albums sound almost nothing alike.
