Two separate Coachella weekends?

Coachella cares about making $. That's all there is to it. If they feel they can make more $ by having two festivals they will.

I remember when the new Yankee Stadium was announced. The "real fans" felt like we were losing tradition and history. Management didn't care, they knew they could make more money. So the fans had to accept it, the new stadium was happening. After the initial shock, we realized the Yankees did a great job with the new stadium. So good that people don't miss the old stadium anymore. They also won the World Series the first year in it, which helps. Maybe if GV gets Radiohead and Daft Punk (the musical equivalent of winning the WS) we will stop complaining.

However,

I also remember when George Lucas first decided to make 3 prequels to Star Wars. The "real fans" were against it because Star Wars was perfect and they didn't want "more". Lucas didn't care, he knew he could make billions. The films were horrible but still made money. Now he made an animated movie and show, is making a live action show, and is considering making episodes 7, 8 and 9. So in this case, Star Wars became tainted and will only become more tainted in the future. If making artists play for two weekends forces GV to get Lolla '10 type of headliners (the musical equivalent of sitting through Star Wars Ep 1), it could be the end of what makes this festival special.


Here's hoping it turns out more like Yankee Stadium and less like Star Wars 1.

so far just about everything ive read and everyone ive talked to is saying there going to the first weekend, i wonder if the first will be vastly more crowded.

Ive heard that at stage coach is really dusty cause coachella kills a lot of the grass, especially in the camp sites, anyone know if this is pretty true?

I read somewhere that in 02 Coachella added a second day and in 07 they added a third day. Now in 2012 they add a second weekend.
Every 5 years they've expanded. Kinda interesting.

Disagree, #1 will have noticably more demand.

In 1979 Led Zeppelin played Knebworth on consecutive Saturdays in August with decent support bill. Except for a pair of low profile warm up shows it was the only gigs they did that year. #1 sold out quickly and #2 did little more than half with the promoter taking a bath.

Perversely, the #2 LZ performance was quite a bit better than #1.

i'd really like to just multi-quote this entire thread and then tell you all to die of cocks, but i'm better than that.

this wasn't my idea, i knew it was happening and made the first post so incredibly vague just to watch this thread spiral out of control into some bonafide comedy (as it did, because this board is incapable of real discussions/civil interactions, mainly because you're all just dying to think you're so much cooler than the person who commented before you) + making a fool out of guedita is fun.

i'm reading through this for the first time actually and this thread could only have helped this not to happen. all the negativity and hate could have scared GV off the idea if anything. but then again, when the line-up comes out they know all you are gonna come crawling back, saying sorry, trying to sell your stupid little lollapalooza tickets, begging for just a one-day pass to one of their two sold-out weekends of shows, and they will rightly laugh in your sad little faces.

While it took me by surprise, I did remember hearing after Big 4/Stagecoach they had seriously considered using the grounds 3 week in a row, but I simply assumed it would be jam or metal or latin or pop themed 1-2 day festival.
