I was working a job where I sat for 8 hours, made good money and I was living at home with my parents. When I would get home, I would spend another four hours in front of my computer at home or several hours at my turntables spinning records while snacking on everything in sight. I would spend my money on fast food and dining out, but would order way more than I should have. I went from September of 1999 to January of 2003 with zero exercise whatsoever.

mamouns prbly reigns supreme now, GREAT late night snack (fairly healthy) and it's cheap

also - ran 10 miles in the past 2 days. have been hitting 15 miles per week for a while now, pretty proud of that.

I've switched my workouts back to super high rep (reps of 20,18,16) with very few breaks. its really high intensity and also has been doubling as my cardio.

I have bad allergies and asthma too. While it can be a road block in exercising sometimes, it definitely doesn't mean that you can't work out. (My specialist constantly insists that working out is good for asthma - it helps improve your lung capacity). If you know what is triggering the reactions, obviously the best bet is to stay away from them. Cigarettes and animal dander are easy enough to avoid in a gym. If you find that you're still having allergic symptoms, you can take an OTC antihistamine a little while before you work out. Definitely bring your inhalers and make sure you have them on hand when you're working out.

IF you find that you always have to use the inhaler when you're working out, then you're probably pushing too hard. Start smaller. Walking (outdoors, indoor track, treadmill, whatever) is a good first step, or you could use a stationary bike on a very low speed. Just get used to doing 20-30 minutes of constant activity. If you start to have trouble breathing, you can slow down or stop until you can breathe comfortably again.

What I find works best for me is high intensity interval training. Here's a quick explanation: http://www.intervaltraining.net/hiit.html
It combines low, medium and short bursts of high and max intensity. Since the sprints are short, it gives me time to recover at a slower pace. As your endurance builds up, your speeds become faster -- it's not based on running a certain miles per hour but rather what amount of effort you personally have to put in to hit low/med/high intensity.

Above all if you're having trouble breathing, slow down or stop until you're okay. And if you are finding that you have breathing problems every time you try to work out, even when you're not really pushing yourself, you really need to see a doctor. Uncontrolled asthma needs daily preventative medications. I was in denial for years because I didn't have problems every day, and I'm amazed at how much more I can do now that I'm on the right medication.
I still think it might be asthma but I won't know until I can afford to go to a better doctor. I hadn't heard of high intensity interval training...I'm definitely gonna try that out. Thanks!

i echo what others have said about food. eat well, but watch portions. snack. i've heard the great advice in this thread of drinking a full glass of water in the morning to get things going. if you do feel like binging, drink a full glass of water. try not to drink sugars. logging what you eat, on something like myfitnesspal.com really helps too.

20 pounds may be a stretch for coachella, but doing SOMETHING will help you lose SOME weight and your body will be more toned and less bloated looking. most people seem to notice the difference in my face.

    best of luck
Thanks! Walking seems like a really easy way to just get into the mindset of exercising every day. The water thing helps! It's easier to just chug a glass of water than to make something anyway, particularly when I know I shouldn't be eating. I haven't used myfitness pal but I do have the Lose It app on my phone, which I'm assuming is similar. It does help to log everything I eat, since I feel like a big piece of crap when I eat too much. Haha.

IMO, 'ideal' weight and BMI are a bit useless for women, it very much depends on your figure type and how you carry weight. We've all known skinny women who can't walk a few blocks without being out of breathe. (And I've at many points in my life been a grossly obese chick - by BMI standards - who can run 10 miles and feel great).

It's much better to focus on fitness than the scale... from that you described, LetThereBeLight, you're out of shape and the allergy/breathing problems have prevented you from doing cardio. I think if you work on that, start easy, work up to more intense workouts, you'll see a positive outcome both in how you feel and how your body looks.

As for losing 20 lbs, it's possible, but something to keep in mind is that losing a lot of weight quickly by exercising intensely or really restricting your food intake... once you stop doing that, you will gain the weight back. It's far healthier to set goals you can stick to, even if that means losing weight more slowly. 1-2 lbs a week is the max you're "supposed" to aim for. It may be that lose more than that, once you start working out too, but make sure you're not setting up a standard that is unhealthy or that you will not be able to stick to long term.
I am definitely out of shape. I don't look bad at 150, I just don't look healthy like I used to. If I could just lose the gut and the love handles I would be way happier. The only reason I want to be at 130 is because I was a little less than that when I graduated and I looked wayyyy better then.

That's crazy. People used to make fun of my little sister (and probably me) in high school because we were so skinny but we would eat like crazy. If she would be going to the restroom, they'd ask her if she was gonna go throw up. So not cool. I threatened to beat a couple people up for that.

    I wish I was a size 2 at 140 lbs! I'm a size 6 at 150.

Hahahaha. When I first got my gym membership and would work out with a trainer, my boyfriend told me my boobs were getting too strong. Lol. He said when I go back (I wasn't paying for it until recently) not to exercise my chest area at all. Haha.

it's really the unnecessary high fructose corn syrup or simple sugars you need to guy out immediately if you want to start dropping weight. i understand that's tough, i mean half of getting back into shape is mental. your body can only hold so many sugars/carbs at any one time, i think your lean muscles can store around maybe 20 grams and your liver a bit more (not exact, ballparking it). once those limits are reached, which is easy, your body IMMEDIATELY turns any extra simple sugars immediately into fat.

it's interesting, it seems like there's a growing movement in the science/medical community to have serious discussions on the dangers of high amounts of sugar on a human being. some people are going so far to have sugar labeled as toxic to some extent:
    http://news.yahoo.com/sugar-regulate...180605186.html

you do need some carbs if you're working out a few days a week, but they need to be complex and taken earlier in the day than later. for your situation i would cut any simple sugars out completely. also with the weight lifting if you do begin start with LIGHT WEIGHTS, especially if you're lifting anything withOUT a spotter. it may be a solid idea to grab a trainer a few times a month. also (i forget if you mentioned you really can't do a lot of cardio). Cardio a few times a week FOR AT LEAST 40 mins will do a lot of good for you. Unfortunately any non-athlete really doesn't start "burning calories" until after about 30-40 mins into a cardio session. i'm not saying you have run on a treadmill, but may try out the stairclimber or the elliptical for 40 mins at a pace you feel IS BEST FOR YOU.

the worst thing you can do is push your body to its limits the first few times working out. getting into shape TAKES TIME, there are really ZERO short-cuts. and STAY AWAY from the thermogenics/fat burners. i really believe that not enough long term studies have been done on them to really parce out the true negative effects they have a persons body (liver, kidneys, etc...) in the long run.

from my experience - i'm 6'5" and the most i can loose in a months time, while remaining healthy, is around 10-12 lbs (12 lbs is really pushing it). i dropped 80 lbs in about 6-7 months a couple years ago and just dropped 20 in the last 2 months.

ALSO - sorry i gotta run. The worst thing you can do it skip meals - remember to eat and keep your calorie intake close, but maybe not over 2000 calories per day. no shortcuts remember
Thanks for all the info! In regards to sugar, IF I was able to cut it all out, but still have sugar in my coffee, would that be effective? Or, at least better then eating a lot of it? I hate artificial sweeteners.
I'll keep that in mind about pushing too hard. A couple of times when I worked with a trainer, I left feeling like I was going to throw up or pass out, or both. I really hated that.
I never skip meals...lol. I know what you mean though.

Hah, you misunderstood me because my wording was awkward. *when* I weighed 140, I wore a size 2. I would never try to be that weight again. I looked like there was something wrong with me... I'm quite happy being heavier and having T&A.

    great job GiT

also - people looking to drop weight, i strongly suggest reading up on calorie counting and possibly putting your metabolism into "starvation mode". even though a calorie deficient on a daily basis is required for weight loss you don't want to go too low or your metabolism will grind to a halt and you'll be doing more damage than good.

    starvation mode: http://www.builtlean.com/2010/04/27/...eating-enough/

calculate your body's calorie burn: http://www.builtlean.com/2010/03/14/...-calorie-burn/
    * make sure to use the multipliers if you're working out more than a couple times a week
    * personally I use the Harris Benedict method
    * you want to shoot for a 15-25% caloric deficient, less of your calculated BMR to find your daily net caloric intake.

I'm only doing Kegel exercises to prepare for Coachella. I'll keep you updated with my progress.

myfitnesspal. dani and a girl at work turned me onto it. you can also keep track of water and exercise.

even though i feel absolutely overwhelmed with pain today, i took a 20 minute walk. it hurts to walk, but i did it. and i don't regret it. this was probably the hardest day this year to get out the door. i'm quite proud of myself.
