    Default Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2013

    October 4th 5th & 6th, 2013.
    http://www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.com/2013/

One of the best FREE festivals in California. World class, diverse line up every year. An amazing festival founded by Warren Hellman, it was his gift to the city, and i believe it is bankrolled until 2015. This is the 13th year of this great festival, which takes place in beautiful Golden Gate Park in S.F. Many late night shows from headlining artists take place at clubs & venues across the city.

To give you an idea of the festival, you can still stream performances from the Arrow stage in 2012:
    http://www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.c...ream-fri.shtml
    http://www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.c...ream-sat.shtml
    http://www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.c...ream-sun.shtml

I would definitely take city transit if possible, parking is a nightmare & very hit or miss. I usually park down by the Safeway at Fulton & La Playa, take the #5 Bus up to the 30th or 25th st. entrances.

Chairs, blankets, coolers, backpacks are all allowed, get there early to get a spot on whatever stage you think you'll spend the most time at. There are 5 stages and there are many food vendors & port-o-johns.

They do not serve alcohol, but there are many savvy people that sell out of their coolers, but if the cops see you blatantly vending they will give you a warning first & then write you a ticket. People sell their paintings, & wares pretty easily, it is very relaxed. Just bring your own booze & you're set.

They have been releasing the line up the past couple of years by putting together medleys of tracks from artists on the line up. They posted the first medley of 2013 on Monday.

*I will update all CONFIRMED artists on the lists below*

Her dad is really plugged into the Austin music scene, producing albums & mentoring people & whatnot, and my dad goes over to his house for house concerts every so often. He says that Natalie Maines' current stuff is good & worth checking out. I'm sure it will be pretty crowded for her.

Yeah I'd rather see Lloyd Maines than Natalie. That guy is one hell of a dobro/mandolin/steel player.

Also, I'd rather eat glass than be within earshot of Bonnie Raitt.

I'd love to hear the backstory of this hate relationship.

    Airport lounge snub?

Musically, she's beyond earning her rank, Tom.

He's just salty people pay more attention to Bonnie Raitt than they do Lucinda Williams.

Round three is up, this is what I was able to clearly recognize:

    Robert Earl Keen
the Time Jumpers (who were great last year)
    Conor Oberst

Some people had figured out more of the Round 3 artists on Facebook, but now I can't find it.

Edited to say that must have been a previous year's medley. Surfing on FB on my phone must have brought up an old thread. Sorry guys, was looking forward to seeing some of those people

    This.

And Butch's Facebook page has the Flatlanders playing on Saturday again. And we missed Gillian & Dave last year, so they're likely. Same with John Doe.

Hahahaha. Yes. That was seriously some of the most fun I've ever had in the park. I still remember Sebastian looking like a lost, frightened puppy in that sea of unwashed humanity while we all lost our minds.

Yeah man. Prior to attending this fest I hadn't been familiar with any of John Doe's work outside of X, but that guy is so great. Every year the lineup is stacked to the point of being overwhelming.

I think they played last year, but I missed them and would very much appreciate another chance to see them play. And he's local, too, so it's really quite possible.

And judging by the show they're doing together at the Fillmore that weekend, it looks as if Oberst will be bringing the Felice Brothers back with him. They were pretty solid in 2010.

    4th lineup medley is out.

    Seldom Scene
    Shovels & Rope
    Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell
    Steve Earle
    Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale
    Jesse DeNatale
    Martha Wainwright
    Robert Ellis
    Jerry Douglas
    Warren Hood Band.

Really excited about Warren Hood. He's a young guy who grew up a fiddle prodigy playing across central Texas with Walter Hiatt and a bunch of other great songwriters whose names are escaping me now. He can really really play.
