This is just a head-to-head matchup. We all know that neither Damon nor Kanye would survive a multi-faceted gothy attack from Robert Smith.

I really liked Gorillaz but I chose K. West.
2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2012, 2013, 2013
Kanye West was leagues ahead of the Gorillaz! Face it.
Kanye is a mediocre rapper at best.
Anyone can rhyme "and" with "and" 7 times in a row.
background: i don't like the gorillaz' songs. i like kanye's songs.
gorillaz were far superior, musically.
kanye was far superior in terms of being a spectacle.
I think it's funny that Kanye gets credit for "just going up there and playing his music" while Gorillaz got panned for it.
The only fuck up Gorillaz had was when Bobby Womack came out for Stylo. That was forgivable due to his age.

Kanye is the best right now (Lil Wayne being the exception). I'm a huge fan of the Gorillaz as well, but Kanye put on a better show. Call it spectacle, or whatever you want. Who wants to see a boring ass set?!
^someone who likes the music itself.

I guess when a good chunk of the audience didn't even know there was a new Gorillaz album...then those people may deem it boring.
I didn't even go near the stage when Kanye was on. There were better things to see.
Matt, it all has to do with the overall show. People were expecting a lot more than Gorillaz and outside of their music, they fell flat on their face. Even to me, the music sounded bland.
And let's face it, you know as well as I do how fickle people are here. There are (undoubetdly) people who are going to hate Kanye's set regardless of how good of a performance he put on. I am willing to bet people will vote for Gorillaz just for the fact that he isn't Kanye. He is an easy target because of how has put himself out there over the past few years, which is his own fault.
If Gorillaz were just going up there and played their songs, they shoudln't have headlined. They were headlined because of how rarely they perform and the fact that they ARE a spectacle. When you remove the visuals from Gorillaz set, you take a way a large portion of what makes their live shows so special (at least that's what made them special in the past).
I personally saw very little wrong with Kanye's music. He fell slightly flat when he tried singing songs from 808's but the songs he performed around the stuff from 808's was very good.
Overall, Kanye's show was a better product than what Gorillaz put out on stage. He didn't just go up and play his music. He played his music and made a show out of it in the process.
The Gorillaz performance last year was the flatest performance from a Coachella headliner I have seen outside of maybe the Beastie Boys in 2003. Granted, I didn't witness Jack Johnson, Coldplay, The Killers etc., but for me, I went into last year hyped up for Gorillaz and left very very disappointed.
I went into Kanye with high expectations and he met them. He was very good.
To be fair, Gorillaz did the hologram thing exactly ONE TIME. One time out of the how ever many they've played in their career(50? 60?)Their Coachella set-up was the same as the Demon Days shows (which people seem to have loved).
I understand where you're coming from, I just had a different perception that night.
EDIT* Also, the hologram thing wasn't even at a Gorillaz concert. It was at an awards ceremony.

lol what a joke that Gorillaz is winning
Seriously
I loved Kanye but I loved Gorillaz more. I don't think pyro during every song would've done much to make Gorillaz better. I just happen to love their new music and they played Empire Ants goddammit.
Ron Paul 2012!
Upcoming Shows:
Four Tet
Coachella 4/20-4/22
Death Cab for Cutie/Magik Magik Orchestra
Radiohead
some other bands
I voted for Kanye though I am not surprised by the current results
One thing that Gorillaz set made clear to me last year was that for the most part, Gorillaz music is often pretty boring too.
"Kids With Guns" is bland and one-note.
"Stylo" isnt really very good at all.
"Empire Ants" is OK, but only because it's a standout amongst other bland tracks.
"Superfast Jellyfish" would have been awesome. In 1995.
Which is not to say that Gorillaz tracks never work. Theres a bunch of gems there ("On Melancholy Hill", the hit singles, etc) but theres also a ton of disjointed crap that no one would tolerate if it just came from Albarn himself without any sort of gimmickry.
Honestly. Call it The Damon Albarn Project or some shit, remove the cartoon gimmick and release all the same music note for note and he'd be lucky to play the Gobi before 6pm.

I was there. And TGTBTQ was different. And better.
But your point is taken.

I was at Coachella for the Gorillaz set in 2010 and only watched the Kanye set on the webcast last week but it still appeared that the Kanye set was much bettter.
Kanye may have stumbled a few times in the performance, including that awkward display of tone deaf singing towards the end, but I would rank his passion and enthusiasm over the Gorillaz "musically correct" set anyday. If I want to hear musically correct performances I'll sit in on a Juilliard recital.
Another fact that hasn't been noted is how the Gorillaz wrapped up their castrated set early at about 11:55 pm, while Kanye went a solid thirty minutes over the Sunday midnight curfew. Nothing about the Gorillaz set made it particularly memorable. In fact, if you compare it with what they wound up playing on the following tour it came off to me as a glorified rehearsal.
I think Gribble and BlackSwan are sharing an account now. Lol.
What none of the Gorillaz fanboys are able to answer is WHY it was so polarizing (aside from idiotically dismissive statements like "u expected hologramzz!!!")
But srsly, you guys don't see any validity to so many peoPle being let down?
At any rate, I haven't listened to Gorillaz much at all since their onstage ego-driven abortion and my life has yet to notice the loss.
