If...
2010: Plastikman, Orbital
2011: Chemical Brothers, Leftfield
Then...
2012: Underworld, FSOL
MagicalLogical thinking!!!
FSOL live was about a rare as events get.
when was the last time they performed live?
Think it was 2009. Bestival and a few other European shows.
FSOL would be an awesome late night Gobi/Mojave set.
Yes, indeed. Sure as hell wouldn't want them wasted in the Sahara.
Aphex Twin is far more likely, but it's really 6 of one / half dozen of the other. Either way, I'm freaking out front row.
^we're acting like we already got this one booked lulz
Love the spirit. I'm confident coach will get us something great; Heck I'm really gunning for a Plaid performance in the Moar Javi tent. Dunno if any of you caught them on this fall tour but damn! Great show
Rhythm is a dancer.
Hypothetical front row freak out.
As to Underworld overseeing the musical program for the Olympics, might they appreciate the opportunity to road-test new material in advance?
Perhaps... its always good to get out and be in front of people performing before you attempt a huge new venture. Like Pantha du Prince stated that he kept a busy tour schedule before and during preparation for the Bells Laboratory for the purpose of keeping fresh and getting some new inspiration.
As for Underworld... they certainly have been working on this for quite some time. I'm surprised it didnt come to mind that UW would be working on this after they announced Danny Boyles was running the show. That's a fucking given. Anyhow, they've posted nonstop about travelling to london and working in the studio..i feel like they'll be well prepared. As for new material, which most if not all of it will be, I have a feeling it will be a lot of cinematic, atmospheric music with driving crescendos and Karl's poetry/words over it. That said, the Olympic performance might be less live production and more pre-production. I think it's totally within the realm of possible for the UW live team to prepare a handful of (say one or two a month) festival sets. Their visuals are all done by another team, they have a stable of songs that are already programmed and their 2011 festival sets dont indicate anything "fresh" or extended. They're all pretty much proper festy sets with a few interchangeable parts.
SO. My take on it is they most likely will not play. But if they do I expect them to play a host of festivals including Coachella and Movement.
Here's to hoping they do play.

Plaid would be awesome! I've yet to see them but have wanted to for 5 years now. A good friend of mine used to run their myspace page.
I also want to see The Orb back. Their set in 2009 was so much fun.
but back on track: Underworld needs to play again before anyone else. I really hope Paul is at least making them offers.
UW said the only way they could afford to come back to the states was with festivals.
Fingers crossed.

I assumed that was a given. It's sure to be tame, accessible, score-like sounds and quite frankly I'd be surprised to hear much from Karl, if anything. Whatever they do has to get the go-ahead from stiff 'we are the world' members of the English olympic committee.
Festivals
(listening to their score from Frankenstein and it's really nice)

Beware the techno raver outfit.
I figure Underworld's score for the Olympics will be unrelated to any new or old Underworld material. I expect it to be a score for a massive live arts/dance/visuals production and as such will not be anything that they will ever play or 'test' out live as Underworld. Think of the Daft Punk score for the Tron movie. I also imagine they will be fare too busy working on the musical production (and more importantly meeting with / dealing with / anxiously waiting on artists/input/progress related to the visual production) to even think about spending two weeks in California for an American music festival, when their music is so underappreciated in this market it wouldn't be worth taking time out of the extremely stressful and extensive task they have to deal with in the Olympics. Especially when they can just play it next year when they aren't so busy...
Via misterpickles in the Underworld thread in the Music Lounge:
Too soon for the 2013 thread?Karl announced at the end of their set at Time Warp that it would be their last show for a while, as they have a "small gig in london".. at least they're modest about it![]()

Fuck yes.On Friday 30th December, Underworld will be providing a 30min mix to Tom Ravenscroft's show on BBC 6Music Radio. Tom's show is on from 9pm-12am every Friday and for his New Year show has got a special mix from Underworld!
He made this announcement on this weeks show and you can hear this announcement at the 2h03m mark in this weeks show which is available to listen until midnight on Friday 17th December (its always a great show by the way. If you dont know, Tom Ravenscroft is the son of the late and much missed John Peel).
Links to the show are here (Windows Media Audio stream):

I know we are not getting an Underworld Radio Show this year, but this is the next best thing so tune in and enjoy. I dont think we'll be hearing much from the boys for quite a while...

I value that opinion. They're pretty damn great. But having seen them both several times there's absolutely no question in my mind who the better act is. All of the permutations of UW's live shows over the years are way more energetic and intricate than are the Chemical Brothers', they dabble in all kinds of music from various genres of dance to film and theatre scores. And the honour of producing the Olympics opening ceremony for a country that was DESPERATE to get the games says it all.
And not that UW hasn't sold it's music to whomever, but I've been hearing the chemis music used for years in so many bloody commercials, video games, sports broadcasts.. their back catalogue has just become a bit dull for me.
Granted this is my opinion, only my opinion and I love the chemis. But I disagree. They may be the the greatest commercially successful dance outfit in history... but they're pretty one dimensional. They'd be a close second for me.
And on a strictly 'dance music' judgement, I like Underworld's stuff soooooooooo much more than the Chemis. Still love that big beat sound though...

Andy Hughes wasn't as big a part of the Orb as Alex Paterson.
