    Default Hopscotch 2011

Little city festival in Raleigh, North Carolina. Should be a blast.

this festival can't make up its mind. you have prurient, oneohtrix, rhys chatham, barn owl, mouthus, william tyler, steve gunn, duane pitre etc. some solid indie stuff in between. and then a shit ton of crap.

To be honest though, if it's the same setup as last year, there are something like 8 venues and no afternoon sets. So, there are so many conflicts it's almost impossible for a good band not to be playing at every moment.

There are a lot a free outdoor shows going on during the day too that aren't really announced until that week, I think.

    I WILL.

It's so rare that I love pretty much every single act* on the top 4 lines of a music festival lineup. I just felt like I had to jump at this.

    *Except Yelawolf. Because wtf.

I guess The Rosebuds aren't on the lineup b/c they have more dates to announce with Bon Iver. Bummer.

Are any of those bands on the poster metal?

Daxton, there is some good metal on that poster. This is kinda neat, I would go if I lived closer

Well.....it's honestly a possibility. Free accommodation close to the fest helps and the passes are so cheap. The more I think about it the more I want to go. But the lineup last year was so much more enticing. And I only lived 2 hrs away. I'll just have to wait and see for a while.

It is a very neat festival. Would you mind telling me which bands are metal? I'm kind of surprised by the lack of NC metal on the lineup.

I don't know anything billed below Barn Owl (who are metal), but Krallice and Liturgy are both really great progressive black metal. Swans isn't metal, but they can definitely be very heavy

I'm all set for this. Booked flight, bought festival pass, and arranged hotel and rental car.

Cool. I've enjoyed the museum the couple times I've been. They're just done a renovation and opened a new wing too. Been meaning to check out Father & Sons and The Scrap Exchange. Cat's Cradle is an obvious awesome choice. But you'll be too busy with Hopscotch to see a show there!

Looks like I'll see you there.

Have a wedding at the end of Aug near NYC and then I'll be amtrak tripping down. Any advice as to what places are worth checking out/avoiding on my train journey would be nice. I'll have about 10 days between wedding and fest.

YES! So awesome. I'm excited to see you and Ange

I guess the stops depend on where the train stops. But Richmond, VA is very pretty. I'd assume your other options include Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC. Have you visited any of those cities before?

And, moreover, why train over car rental? The Amtrak trains on that northeast corridor route tend to run late -- anywhere from a couple hours to (worst case scenario, which I once experienced) a couple days.

Right - well, I don't drive and Ange hasn't driven for a very long time. Maybe it is time for that to change.

I've not been to anywhere south of NY over that side of the US.

Yeah, I'd say Courtney covered the bases from NYC to NC. What are the stops the train makes in NC?

I think we are more likely to drive, so anywhere that isn't too far off the freeway is cool.

Well, if you start your trip after NYC in Philly, all those places Courtney mentioned are right off the interstate (95 then 85) and on your way to Raleigh.
