They actually played 5 minutes less than any of the subheadliner acts, and given that I could name at least 5 songs they could have added to their set, it wasn't due to a lack of material. For all intents and purposes, they were opening for Kanye West, not sharing a headlining bill. Also, you have 18 posts, you don't get to say fail.
Actually, The Strokes have a new album out, have been around much longer than Kanye West, and have less known ego. If anyone whined about not playing if they weren't billed as a headliner, you can be damn sure it was Kanye West. The Strokes have clout, and Kanye has drawing power. There's no question that Kanye truly headlined Sunday night. There were three headliners this past weekend, not four. If there had been four, The Strokes would have taken the Outdoor stage after PJ Harvey, and everyone would have gone home happy. Presets vs. Kanye West vs. sleep? Zzzzzzzzzzz.

I don't think so. Maybe pencil them in for the Pavement/Strokes or Thom York/Duran Duran billing spot.

I have thought about this for a few days now, and I've come to the unfortunate conclusion that Death Cab and Lady Gaga will probably be two of the three headliners.

    Coldplay
    Florence and the Machine~Justice

    Pearl Jam
My Morning Jacket (2 hr set)~Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

    Depeche Mode
    The xx~The Replacements

    Sahara
    Swedish House Mafia
    Armin Van Burren
    ATB

I changed mine a bit, I'm thinking Depeche Mode might be there since they've talked about doing a tour with bringing alan wilder back into the band, which I imagine would lend itself to sort of a greatest hits tour. I think that would be a pretty big deal and the fact that they had to cancel both their sold out SF date and their sold out San Diego date (two cities which draw a lot of coachella attendees).

I'm also going all out and saying that Coachella NEEDS to get the replacements. They haven't had a reunion that would command a subheadlining spot on the main stage since My Bloody Valentine.

This will never happen. You should shoot yourself for even suggesting to yourself that it has potential to happen. Don't shoot yourself.... but don't jynx 2012 like that. You'll see Led Zeppelin (sort of possible, but not happening) headlining before you'll see Gaga headlining.

As of this second, Adele, Lykke Li, Broken Bells or The Shins, Fleet Foxes and Toro y Moi make a ton of sense to me, but that's right now, not six months from now or whenever they start assembling the undercard. I would love to see Macklemore personally, if I recall correctly he's at both Outside Lands and Sasquatch this year (unfortunately I can't go to either) so maybe that will put him enough on the Coachella radar.

For headliners I'm thinking that Red Hot Chili Peppers makes sense, although multiple repeats has me wondering if Coachella will avoid them after complaints about all the headliner repeats last year. Gaga is not happening, it's obvious Coachella will sell out in like a day next year, they no longer need to include a super poppy headliner just to sell tickets. I also think we can expect a classic rock headliner because there wasn't one this year.

Daft Punk and Outkast are simply not happening (but I'd jizz my pants if either ended up on the poster), let's stop getting our hopes up and then if they ever do headline we'll flip out and it'll be unexpected. Radiohead has more of a chance because they do have an album out. So I guess I'll say that my predictions are Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers and a classic rock artist (Petty? Elton? Eric?).

Detox will be out before coachella 2012, and Dr Dre hasn't played a gig in a long time.

Were going on 2 years in a row of a hip hop headliner, i think its reasonable to say were gonna have another one. It should be Dr Dre, with special guests Snoop D-O- Double G and Ice Cube

Foo Fighters - Radiohead - Dr. Dre

In recent years it seems like the 3 headliners kind of break down like this:

    1) There’s the insanely huge, iconic music celebrity. The Big Fish of the weekend. (Kanye, JayZ, Paul McCartney).

    2) Then there’s the pretty darn big act, with a bunch of radio hits, an established and reliable following, but hardly at the cultural icon level of the Big Fish. (Kings of Leon, Gorillaz, the Cure)

    3) Finally, you have the Coming Out Party for a younger band who hasn’t had the chance to headline these kind of events before. If Coachella can pat itself on the back by giving this spot to an act who’s been a part of their undercard before, then even better. (Arcade Fire, Muse, the Killers)

Obviously, an act becomes more likely if they’ve released an album in the past year.

With this pattern in mind (and assuming Coachella doesn’t want to repeat headliners who’ve played in the last ½ decade or so), I think the options break down a little like this:

    1) Radiohead (new album and everything), Bruce Springsteen (if he were to wind up releasing an album in the next year), Lady Gaga (yikes), Outkast (may have a new album), U2 (never gonna happen but at least they have an album coming out, right?)

    2) Daft Punk, Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam, Chili Peppers, REM, Foo Fighters, Beck

    3) Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix (but probably not because they just played last year), Death Cab for Cutie… I don’t think TV on the Radio and My Morning Jacket are big enough yet, are they?

My way too early prediction is Radiohead, REM, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Maybe Bruce instead of Radiohead if he releases an album.

A bunch of DJs and electronic acts that I'll rave face to. Two headliners that I'll be indifferent about and one that I'll end up seeing a few songs from, maybe. A smattering of indie bands to mix things up during the day. And 4-5 acts, likely electronic, that I'll flip my shit over.

Bloc Party. They're getting back together later this year and are going to start touring next year.

No they haven't. Alan left on his own accord and has state he will never come back. He is still friends with Martin and has helped with the remixes and made a charity appearance with the band for one song, but there hasn't been any talk of him coming back. In fact, he has stated repeatedly otherwise.

This would easily be the worst Coachella line up in history.
