Olivia Tremor Control were fantastic last night in San Francisco. Absolutely no sound issues and the new songs were great. They did a few Arcade Fire covers, which was a really fitting homage.

I'm bummed I missed this, but apparently Heather MacIntosh was only with them in LA. Did they have a cellist? Her additions to the FYF set really killed, especially the end of I Have Been Floated when her and John did dueling bowed instruments. So pretty.

Yeah, likewise. It is cool to carry on a decent conversation with a fellow board member in person. I think some of the other boardmembers are afraid to meet me or talk to me.

I kept trying to get your attention at Coachella last year. I was up front at the Outdoor several rows back during that long wait for She & Him.

Sometimes celebrities intimidate people. Not saying it's your intention to do so, but to a lot of people here, you're kind of mythical.

DFA1979 was horrible. What a bunch of whiny babies. Not a headliner at all. Descendents should have headlined. Left early.

Thoroughly enjoyed: Desecendents, OFF!, Ty Segall, OTC

Did not enjoy: The shitty, incompetent sound guys; dust everywhere (still!); lack of places to sit that weren't dirt mounds

I got pretty sick (claustrophobia settled in) around 7pm and almost threw up everywhere. I didn't want a repeat of MBV at the SMC, so I had to sit down for pretty much the rest of the night.

Our good friend played with Girls and we had no fucking idea he was even in the band; we felt like bad friends but to our credit, he just up and left LA with no notice a few months ago. (I guess to start playing with Girls...)

I saw a few of you in the distance, but I wasn't in the mood fr awkward conversations that day. I avoided pretty much every person I knew that I saw.

it has nothing to do w/ sound... ive already stated that. It was in complete reference to their appearance on stage.

A bunch of old guys playing instruments looks just like this other band that's a mixed group of young people who also play instruments. So they're aping Arcade Fire. Because they play a french horn. Even though all their music was released in the 90s.

Neutral Milk Hotel, which opened the show, consisted of four musicians who in some songs played as many as eight instruments. The arrangements were eccentric - sparser songs consisted of just an acoustic guitar accompanied by a musical saw, a melodica, a French horn, or a banjo played with a violin bow - but the melodies glided by like classic British Invasion pop. Jeff Mangum's lyrics, which he bawled as much as sang, ricocheted between surreal images, stream-of-conscious psycho-analysis and deep reflection. After a breathless verse about life, death, roller-coasters and prevarication in one of his best songs, "Gardenhead," he sang, "It gets hard to explain," as if words could not communicate what was occuring in his mind.

Similarly, genres could not really characterize the music played Monday night. Psychedelia seemed as much of an influence on the melodic canterwaul of Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control as the free jazz of Albert Ayler, the progressive rock of Soft Machine and the electro-acoustic music of Iannis Xenakis. During its set, Olivia Tremor Control flucuated between shimmering pop with three-part vocal harmonies to noisy jams during which the band's members all switched instruments with one another.

When joined by members of Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control had eight musicians onstage. At one point there were five people singing simultaneously, one person playing a tuba with its bell pressed against the wall and another crouching on the floor humming into his Moog synthesizer. Sometimes the collective seemed like the Portsmouth Sinfonia, the conceptual 1970s orchestra whose musicians used instruments they could barely play. But most of the time it seemed like a dedicated pop-music explorer. The band sometimes even surprised itself, with members commenting to one another, "Listen to that great chord," or "What was that swarming sound?" after a particularly exhilarating song.
