Default people with ebay experience(no this isn't about tickets)

I've never sold anything on ebay, anybody have any tips that may have done this before? I am trying to sell a roland synthesizer.

My tip is look for ads for the same item or something similar to get an idea of what people sell for, what they charge for shipping and handling and what specs they list in their ads.

    The more pictures the better.

    Example.

Sunday evenings (around 5 or 6 pm PST) are the best time to list things if you do a week long auction, cause that's the same time the auction will end, and that's when the most people are on ebay checking out stuff.

Also if you have an ebay account set up already, which I assume you do, when you look up similar ads like faxy said, on the left hand side click on Completed Listings. That will show you what shit actually sold for, as opposed to what people are asking for it on the Active Listings.

That roland synth listing was perfect, in terms of pictures. Captured all the necessary info.

Obviously make sure you know how much it's gonna cost to ship before you list it. Sometimes I guesstimate and end up eating shipping costs.

Also, hopefully you have a decent amount of feedback. Because a lot of buyers arent going to go with somebody who has like 10 feedback, as opposed to somebody who had 100 and had the same product at the same price. Oh yeah, make sure to put a tracking number on your package when you ship it. Its going to cover your ass if somebody accuses you of not getting your item and everything.

What model? I have a bad/good habit of buying vintage synths. Might save you the listing fees if it's interesting and a good price.
Wow, 12 step meetings at Coachella, who knew? SOBERCHELLA.COM

awesome tips, thanks for that. like i said, i've never sold anything on ebay so i wonder how the no ratings issue will play into this.

^it's the roland gaia sh-01 that came out last year and is a virtual analogue synth. it's basically in mint condition and has hardly ever been used, i'll pm you some pics and more info. still have the box, manuals, cords, and everything it came with too. i had hopes to use it more but times are tough and i could really use the cash before coachella.

If your selling you can print labels through paypal. Advatage is you get a bit of a discount. Also your package comes with tracking for a fraction of what it would cost at the post office. You print the label and it has a barcode on it that is scanned so it can be tracked. You can even track first class & parcel through paypal shipping. UPS shipping is offered also. Good thing about this is you can pay for everything right out of your paypal account and drop it off. No standing in line or fronting money out of your pocket.

You can print & pay for any (not just ebay sales) postage through paypal multi order shipping but only through USPS.

so thanks to all you guy's tips, it looks like someone out of state wants to buy this. i know i should not ship until payment is received, but if this is a paypal transaction should i wait the full processing time until the payment shows up in my account to ship?

If it comes from a credit card or straight from a bank account, you should be good to ship as soon as you recieve notification. Sometimes, the paypal payment will come in the form of an "e-check" and takes a few days to clear...in that case I wait for it to clear. it will say that very clearly in your paypal account if that's the case. that's a rare case, also.

For $60 I attended an all day seminar in Anaheim put on by Ebay. It gave me the confidence, strategies, tricks, and handouts to know the most successful techniques to selling. It was well worth the price.

So I've never sold anything on eBay in my life, and have only purchased (outright, not at auction) three things over 10 years, so I only have a feedback rating of 3. I put four items up for auction yesterday, with the opening bid price quite low, no reserve, but with the shipping prices on the higher end of the scale (but where I had seen some others set it as well). Got a curt message from a member (who buys and sells similar items) demanding to know why I'd set it so high, as "she's never seen it so high in 18 years." I wrote her a short message back stating the item was rare and I wanted to send it expedited shipping with plenty of packing and insurance so it would arrive safely. Which is true, it's fragile. (Plus I don't want to eat shipping costs if it doesn't sell for much.)

Have I shot myself in the foot with my shipping prices? Others are selling the same item with free or economy shipping, but at a set purchase price more than 10 times the opening bid of my no-reserve auction. I have several watchers on all my auctions, which don't end until friday. This crap is making me kind of nervous. Craigslist is so much easier to deal with.

some people may ask for a break in shipping costs, so expect that. and you may not get as many hits depending how high shipping cost is. were any of the other items people were seeking auctions, or just buy it now? you could also set a reserve, but I think they charge you for that.

The others were not auctions, just buy it now. I didn't set a reserve because it was my understanding that's a hindrance in an auction.

I think so, but some people like it. I think you should be ok if you've already got watchers. Good luck.

Some people are just assholes. Shipping prices CAN have a really weird effect though. i have found that pumping the shipping prices into the actual cost of the item and making the shipping price lower actually helps quite a bit in getting higher prices for items. I have eaten some in shipping in order to get higher bids. You really never know, though. Shipping has always been expensive and it's only getting more and more everyday, and it's a concept that is still very difficult for people to understand.

Did you actually estimate shipping based on size/weight/insurance and everything? You can estimate with USPS - if your price is materially higher, I'd change it. You can also give the customer the several shipping speed options so they can pick which works best for them.

No, guesstimated. Going to pick up supplies now and do all the proper packing and see how far off I am. I'll then change it if need be.
