I was really into Hopefall too. They started out as a Christian Hardcore band, but quickly moved away from that as they gained popularity. I don't think they are around anymore.

OH MAN I really, really liked Hopesfall.! No Wings To Speak of and The Satellite Years were both so good. This song is my absolute favorite:


Then they released A Types which totally changed their sound and totally fucking sucked. I guess they had another album after that too but I never bothered.

One more band before the girlfriend gets here...I'm really stoked how much this thread has taken off. I wish more people would discuss and not just post "lists" of random YT videos, but recs are recs I guess.

PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS

I became a fan of these guys after randomly buying Fuck With Fire from an eBay seller that i was buying other records from because it was cheap, and it immediately struck me how they sounded nothing like any other post hardcore band I had listened to. But then Up In Them Guts came out a couple years later, and that would become one of my favorite albums of all time, of any genre.

It brought everything the band had been trying to do in their previous works together and for the first time the songwriting was really cohesive and the produyction didn't sound like absolute shit. The sound was dirty, grimy, and dark, and the entire band sounded like they were playing together as one, huge, unrelenting force, with as much strength as they could muster.

I've also never heard another singer like this before...the vocals are not immediately appealing at all, but they're just so fucking raw that i always found them to be irresistible.





And then Mercy came out and just continued the onslaught of ferocity.

i saw planes mistaken for stars open for someone years and years ago. i'm not sure who they were playing with, and i never really checked them out after that. i like what i hear though, i dig his voice.

So does nobody else know/like Trash Talk? I've seen them twice and they were one of the more insane and high energy punk shows I've ever attended. They opened for Fucked Up in Pomona at a pizza place. The band started playing a slow, Sabbath-y sort of thing. From the back of the crowd, I heard this loud yell, so I turned around and saw a guy barrelling through the audience, knocking people over as he charged toward the stage. Near where I was standing, he put his feet onto peoples' backs, lept towards the stage, grabbed the microphone while in the air and let out a scream. The rest of the show was an absolute maelstrom.

Their first two EPs are incredible: Plagues and Walking Disease. The first album was a monster as well. I haven't heard any of the newer stuff yet, but I really need to.

Yeah, Eyes & Nines is apparently the only thing I haven't heard. Apparently they consider Walking Disease their first album, but they released it as a 7". That tells you a lot about the length of the songs.

I remember seeing Boysetsfire in Minneapolis back in 2000. Ann Beretta opened. It was in the back space of this cafe called the Foxfire, good times.

I probably actually like hardcore a lot less than many of you in here. I have a low tolerance for some of the stuff (especially anything bro-ey, ska-ey, or if it has that awful 90s pop punk whine to it), but there's a lot I love. Early L.A. hardcore like Black Flag, Fear, Adolescents (inspiration for many generations of intolerable skate punk bands but goddamn is their self titled fun). Lots of SST stuff and melodic indie hardcore like Minutemen, Husker Du, Big Black, and Naked Raygun. Some D.C. post hardcore like Fugazi and Nation of Ulysses. And some 00's shit like Blood Brothers and Fucked Up. Lately I've kind of been opening up to heavier shit and more basic shit as opposed to the artfag stuff I've typically gone for. Although my patience for actual punks and punk shows has dwindled significantly.

Anyway.

Bryan, I'm really enjoying the Trash Talk stuff...and it's all so short that it's really easy to listen to all of it in quick sittings. I'd love to see these guys live.

I remember another recent hardcore album I really enjoyed, last year's Crosses from Carthaganian, which fuses traditional hardcore with posthardcore elements. There don't seem to be any videos online, but it's really worth checking out


And yeah, Adolescents' S/T is really great. I also really like Rick Agnew's solo album that gets packaged with it sometimes.

Now I want to talk about Walter Schreifels, or more accurately, three of Schreifels' prjects that I find importn to the hardcore/posthardcore scene.

First up is the late-80s New York straight edge hardcore band Gorilla Biscuits, which pulled a lot of influence from early pre-thrash Agnostic Front and the Cro-Mags, but also infused a lot of the melodic influences that were becoming ever-widening in the hardcore scene at the time. They have only 2 albums, that back to back clock in at just under 40 minutes even with 24 songs, but man are they good. Schreifels was the guitarist and primary song-writer





After only a couple of years, Gorilla Biscuits split up, with the singer forming punk band CIV and Schreifels starting QUICKSAND, a seminal posthardcore project with two albums, Slip and Manic Compression. Even though it's definitely not hardcore, I remember the first thing I though the first time I heard Quicksand was "fuck, this shit is HEAVY." The bass lines are thick as all hell, the drums pounding as hard as possible, and the guitars just shred, all the while Schreifels is screaming his lungs out the entire time. Both albums are must-haves i think, but Manic Compression would be included in a list of "best albums of all time" for me.







And finally in 2001 came Rival Schools and the album United By Fate, which i think is the culmination of everything Schreifels was trying to do up until that point. The lyrics are biting, the vocals are controlled yet raw, and now the rhythmic power has taken a backseat to screaming, noisy guitar and much slower songs structure. They had only the one album until this year, but it has had a long-lasting resonance for a lot of people over the last 10 years.




Unfortunately most of the Rival School vids on YT are really shitty live recordings...that "Undercover's Gone" video is the only user-submitted audio track I could find. Hopefully these VEVO videos embed, but if not, go to the page, they're worth watching.
