That test is pretty useless. Most of the questions could be understood or interpretted in multiple ways, making it impossible to give a meaningful answer.

Also, in this poll, does "Independent" refer to the American Independent Party, or to being unaffiliated with a party?

Independent as in unaffiliated. I kind of assumed most people wouldn't be familiar with the American Independent Party. Kudos for you to being knowledgeable

Interesting that Ron Paul is on the upper hemisphere, since I think most political junkies would think that he would be in the far lower-right quadrant..

it kinda seems like you did mean AIP since your poll options seem to scale from political left to political right.

All of Ron Paul's ideas would more or less usher in a different brand authoritarianism (and probably a much more Christian one, have fun with that "Libertarians").

Agreed. The questions and answers are both way too broad. But anyway...

That's true...my bad. During the presidential elections in 2008 I helped register several hundred students on campus and 99% of them mistook "Independent" for "unaffiliated", so I figured you guys would too.

I wouldn't have even thought twice about it without Radiohead's post.

Many of my friends registered as "Independent" as well and started wondering what was up when they started getting political mailings.

I voted Socialist in your poll, but I more closely identify as a Democratic Socialist

Yeah when we were registering people we had to make a habit of making sure they new the difference. Like I said most didn't. And these were college students, not random party riff-raff like the folks at Coachella

Why didn't you vote Democratic Socialist? I made that an option (since that's what I am, woot woot!).

Keep in mind this graph captures the entire political spectrum. All the way on the bottom right is complete anarchy. Rape, murder, etc would all be cool with someone down there. Thats why Ron Paul is in the middle, although I agree he should be a little lower into the purple.

I'm a social democrat but i vote democratic. I'd rather have the party I kind of agree with have the a majority than the one that I despise.

Not true actually. Social democracy predominantly maintains a capitalist economy. Democratic socialism is a socialist economy with a degree of free market capitalism.

Either way, both beliefs are so far left that, for now, anyone on that end of the spectrum can consider one another allies.

That's what I assumed (when I picked it). It's weird, because apparently the American Independent Party is one of the most prominent on the non-major parties, but I don't really know of anyone of prominence who's affiliated with it.

^^^ I'm registered "Independent", but I was unaware of an "American Independent Party" (and I'm a bit of a political junkie). I just didn't want to be affiliated with any of the other parties and wanted to be able to vote in open primaries.

Upon further investigation, the AIP is also called the Constitution Party, which I have heard of and have seen in my party registration paperwork. Ergo, registering Independent is NOT the same as registering with the American Independent Party.

Default Re: The Political Party Poll!

that varies from state to state, actually. if you don't want to be affiliated with a political party, you usually choose "unaffiliated".

The Constitution Party and American Independent Party merged in 2008 and then split again in 2008 for some states because of ballot access. some states list both the AIP and the Constitution Party, so while they are affiliated with each other, they aren't the same.

Here in California, only the Democratic and third party ballots support open primaries. The Republican Party is apparently too afraid of becoming too moderate so they use closed primaries.

No surprise here. However, Ron Paul being in the blue kind of ruins this for me. I'm sure that if he actually took this test he'd be in my area.

I picked Libertarian in this poll but I almost always vote with AIP in local elections. Almost voted for Chuck Baldwin in the Presidential election, but went with a write-in for my hero instead.

edit: Well I can't see my graph, and I've posted images on here dozens of times...Is this not an image post? Anyway, I'm in purple; 5.12 left/right, -6.92 up/down
    Ron Paul 2012!

    Upcoming Shows:
    Four Tet
    Coachella 4/20-4/22
Death Cab for Cutie/Magik Magik Orchestra
    Radiohead
    some other bands

Fair enough. I don't remember ever seeing "unaffiliated" when I registered... just Independent. I guess it varies state to state...

FYI, I originally registered in NY, re-registered in AZ.

many forms have unaffiliated listed separately from the political parties. if I remember correctly, it was a check box under the entire list that said "I do not wish to affiliate with a party". but it definitely varies from state to state like you said.

Reading through this thread has been truly frightening. It's no wonder that our country is in such shambles and has such a grim future. I get the feeling that a lot of you are very young and don't understand what it means to be a real American. Just remember that none of you would even be able to enjoy a festival like Coachella if it weren't for large corporations, and not a single one of you would even be alive if it weren't for God. I will say that I did not necessarily like the wording of some of the questions. I wonder how many of you young, confused "liberals" will look back at silly polls like this years from now and say "Wow, what was I thinking?" Probably more of you than you realize.
