Default "I forgot how great __________ (record/band) was"

A place to post something youre rediscovering after a period of at least 5 years, preferably 10.

I havent listened to this in at least 15 years and even then I wasnt all that into it.
By 95 I was really burnt out on the American grunge thing and had bounced to early drum and bass and BritPop of the Blur/Verve stripe.
I think it had more to do with genuine earnestness being replaced by fake self-seriousness (SEE: Live, Smashing Pumpkins around this time, etc) and had all seemed like a huge drag.

Having said that, this record here should be guilty of all that overwrought heaviness too, but listening to it this week it actually feels much warmer than I had expected it would. There's a lot of humanity and life in what you might expect to be texbook grunge dirges. Maybe that's due to the baggage of the era.

I love that Mad Season album. There's a sense of melancholy to the record that transcends the usual grunge mopiness. I think I will go home after work and give it a listen. In true form to the thread, I believe it has been at least 5 years since I've heard it.

It's been 7 for me. It always felt to me like Layne getting ready to die, some of the songs are so beautiful yet so sad.

Such a beautiful record. It means even more to me now than it did because a friend of mine who used to listen to it all the time while doing heroin, which ultimately took his (and Layne's) life. There are times when I feel Above is more brilliant than any of the AiC records, but then I listen to Facelift again and all of those thoughts wash away. Still an amazing offering.

David Gray's White Ladder from 1998 - just whipped it out of the blue and from beginning to end, awesome. "not the only style of music I listen to" but absolutely incredible. He recorded the entire thing in his apartment in London-

I like that album because Tower records had it on sale for 3 bucks and they mislabeled a copy of the first RATM album as White Ladder. David Gray got me RATM's self titled for super cheap, and I'll never hate the guy for that reason.

I always liked Mad Season's "Above" CD. About 5-6 years ago, I introduced it to a co-worker, who's stuck in the 90s. He'd never heard of it, and he's been thanking me ever since. "River Of Deceit" still gets occasional play in my iTunes.

I have that Mad Season album on my iTunes but I have only listened to it twice. I'll have to listen to it after my Coachella research.

I didn't like the Strokes' first album when I first heard it in high school, and I avoided them like Nickelback until last year when I saw the video for Last Nite. I was like "Jesus, that song was so good," then I borrowed a copy of the album and now it's one of my favorites. Obviously this probably isn't something most people on this board can relate to as far as the Strokes are concerned.

To my mind, Neil Finn is a fucking genius.
A brilliant pop songwriter in the McCartney mold, and at least as good as the brothers Gibb.
Woodface for the most part holds up really well, minus a couple somewhat-dated cultural/environmental commentary style songs.
As usual, Finn is at his best writing about relationships and crafting shimmering melodies.
Worth your download for the 1-2-3 punch of "Weather With You" > "Whispers and Moans" > "Four Seasons in One Day" alone.

P.S. we deserve a Coachella rematch for Crowded House since their set in 07 was ruined by a bunch of Fresno Rage-fan trash.

Unlike a lot of people, it's not "Pretty in Pink" that got me into The Psychedelic Furs. I was 16 when their Book of Days album was released; it was dark and melancholy, and something about Richard Butler's voice just struck a chord with me. By sheer coincidence I was listening to this album tonight for the first time in quite a few years and was pleasantly surprised at just how well it holds up. In retrospect, and with a better sense of their discography, it's easy to hear how this album was an obvious repudiation of the glossy, over-produced silliness of their mid-80's records. At the time, though, it was just the right sound at the right time.

I know Talk Talk Talk is widely considered to be their best album, but for me this one runs an extremely close second, and usually edges it out for first place.

I would like to second both Crowded House and Psychedelic Furs. Neil Finn is one of the most underrated pop songwriters there is. He's a fucking genius.

Brainiac. Anyone remember them? I hadn't listened to Hissing Prigs in Static Couture in so long. That was some fucked up, funky, noisy, dancy shit right there. R.I.P. Timmy Taylor.
