wow i just discovered this thread and it's awesome. also..black keys...LOL. 5 years?
in 5 years, i think it could look like
LCD Soundsystem
Them Crooked Vultures (if they make a 2nd album)
Bon Iver
Coachella 2012-2013
Bon Iver, Beach House, Fleet Foxes, TV on the Radio, The XX and Phoenix are all on pace to be headliners imo. Arctic Monkeys, Interpol, MGMT and Vampire Weekend if they can regain the mass appeal of their early albums. Edward Sharpe, Mumford and Sons, and Passion Pit might need more than 5 years but if they have just 2 or 3 albums as big at their first ones they could be looking at a fast rise to a headline spot.
I definitely can see Bon Iver, Arctic Monkeys, Interpol, Phoenix, Mumford and Sons, and Vampire Weekend headlining after a few more successful albums.
Although I am a fan of Beach House, I don't see their sound being anything large enough to headline a festival at the size of Coachella.
And, Edward Sharpe's first album was really not that big. The singles were successful, but the album itself was somewhat bland.
The Weeknd & Drake
Sigur Ros
Vampire Weekend
Bon Iver
When coachella becomes 4 days..
Tycho 01/14
Local Natives 01/28
Local Natives 01/29
Dirty Projectors 02/05
Coachella w1 & w2
Death Cab for Cutie, big enough to headline now? Just curious what you guys think.
The fact that people are seriously considering and seemingly hoping for Drake to headline Coachella should be proof enough that penises.
Beach house ?? really? Belle & Sebastian is mellow in a Beach House way and far better AND
headlined the Hollywood Bowl and I think it was sold out - 18,000 people and I doubt they would ever
be a headliner.
and Primus ?? NO WAY - thats just naming any random band you like.
This is one of our worst threads.
My prediction is we will have 1 electro 1 classic and 1 rap/hiphop/rnb headliner. Rock is dead, there hasnt been a good new rock band since....
"How long will this last, this delicious feeling of being alive, of having penetrated the veil which hides beauty and the wonders of celestial vistas? It doesn't matter, as there can be nothing but gratitude for even a glimpse of what exists for those who can become open to it."
It's the rap headliner possibilities who are getting thin and they only have had one a year for the last 3 years. Last year had 3 rock bands who had never headlined and this year has one plus Radiohead who could draw a sell-out if they headlined every year. In 5 years what classic rock band will even be around to headline? Stones, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Petty and Neil Young are all getting pretty old and touring less and less.
Bands that have been around for more than a decade are considered classic. This means that the only non classic rock headliners in the past few years are the black keys and arcade Fire.
Also if you think for one minute, you realize that there is no short supply of hiphop/rnb that has never played coachella.

10 years makes you classic? Come on.

within the next five years- Jack White either solo or White Stripes, Phoenix, Bon Iver, Watch the Thrown, Drake, The Knife, Foo Fighters, Outkast, Adele, DAFT PUNK.
^The Knife counts as EDM, but I don't see them headlining. There isn't anybody I can think of unless Deadmau5 releases an album that gets sampled by Kanye.

Yeah that's very true. I'm a humongous fan of Beach House, but they couldn't headline.
these debates are so hard to have because it's all hypothetical. a year ago nobody would have said Bon Iver and now you're all saying it. if Beach House's 2012 release has the same commercial and critical success that Bon Iver had in 2011, they are just as much worthy of headlining in 3-5 years. You can't say Bon Iver COULD headline within the next five years and Beach House could not. Beach House's sound is just as large as Bon Iver, and in my opinion it is larger.
Edit: and Kid Robot I'm not trying to single you out, you just had basically the point i'm trying to make in your previous post. there seems to be a few folks that are saying Bon Iver yes, Beach House no.
this is probably one of the most pointless threads...seriously.
First of all, think about it, to headline you have to have STAGE PRESENCE. Does mopey Beach House have that? No. And I'm a huge BH fan. I'm also realistic.
For headliners, if it's going to stay 3 days, you have to think variety. Most of the acts mentioned would never headline, aside from an Outkast reunion.
Think about bands like the Killers and Muse, bands that were 6 point font on the poster back in the day...then honed their live shows, put out some ANTHEMIC songs, add some fireworks and lasers and viola, Headliners.
Death Cab..past their expiration date I think, if they were going to headline, if would of happened by now..they're kinda played out, already peaked IMO..
The ONLY exception I can think of is Jack Johnson, still not sure how that happened...

There's no question she could headline right now if she wanted to even with only 2 albums. It's not likely for her to do festivals but if Coachella had the opportunity to book her would they not? If on the lineup, are we saying she's someone who'd be billed under the Black Keys and between SHM and Mazzy Star? We're talking about the hottest name in music right now. Is she too boring? Coachella has surprised us before.
